Hi, When putting the private plate on retention. How many days do you have to put the original number back on the car? Is it 7 days or 7 business days? Will

I do not believe they work in business days as you can use a car 7 out of 7 days. I would assume 7 total days but have not found it on the DVLA site. I think it is on the form itself when it arrives ?

I’m not entirely sure as I’m trying to remember when I last did it but when the form arrives it tells you to do it immediately
I don’t think it gives a time frame

There's a page on .gov to keep a registration number The page says the service is immediate, keeps the plate on retention, and costs £80 Will

So to reverse the question - I am buying a car on Thursday and have a number on retention. Can I change the number over straight away on line or do I have to wait for the V whatsit in the old number and with me as owner and then change it over on line

Again this is guidance, I would recommend a call to DVLA they are very helpful.
You need the car in your name (V5) completed. You cannot do it until then. This means the seller should fill in the on-line form. You do have to wait for the new V5C to land in your post, there is no electronic shortcut that I am aware of, I called them as well.
You can then use the new V5C certificate on line with the numberplate document and assign it. This will generally result in an email and almost instant transfer if the forms are aligned.
When we bought the MB last year we did the above and I had the V5 in my name through the post in 2 days. I then went on line and had the plate on it two hours later when the email came through.
Again I am not a legal authority on this but hoping to help.

That was my own experience too, Alistair.
Sadly, it's down to your insurer as to whether to waive the second amendment from first change of vehicle on policy, to change of VRM on that vehicle a week later.
V5 issue first. Await paper to land on mat. Change VRM and ring insurer.

might be able to make that work because the dealer gives you 8 days insurance cover when you collect the car so I can drive it homw, garage it and wait for the V whatsit to arrive.
How do you get number plates off a car. They seem to be stuck on these days and I dont want to pull the paint off too.

Option A - Hairdryer to soften adhesive Option B - dental floss between plate & paint Option C - plastic kitchen flipper used as gentle wedge whilst heating with hairdryer.. Hopefully...
