Hello all,
I am a new member from the U.S. (Iowa). Glad to share the passion with other M3W owners! I am planning a very special road trip this summer: All 48 contiguous states over the 3 months of summer (I'm a college professor and coach with the summer off). I will be doing it in a new 2017 M3W. Yes, I know. Crazy! But I love the challenge and have made very long trips before on motorcycles. Currently in the planning phase. Students are helping me determine the route through a computer algorithm. The criteria are: 2 lanes only, no big cities, stop at landmarks, national parks, and unique and interesting places. I will be writing a book about the trip and will have a blog site with daily updates and pictures.

A Question for 3W owners: I will have extra tubes and an extra regulator and battery with me. I am wondering about what tools I should have, and what extra fasteners, bolts, etc. I should have with me (just in case vibration wins).

Many thanks, and I'm glad to be aboard
Will

I would spare the 2nd battery but take an additional timer belt with me.
And earplugs and a lot of suncreame...

Wish you all the best - but you will hate long distance drives when you hardly can move your legs. A motorcycle provides much more freedom to move your body than the M3W.

We switched to a M3W from a 2014 BMW K1600GTL and can do 400-500 miles days w/o any issues. You would need to plan an oil service during your ride and figure out a luggage solution. A steering wheel spacer would allow more room for your legs. Sounds like an awesome adventure! 👍👍👍

P.S. I would change headlights to LEDs before the trip, the stock ones are very dim.

Welcome to TM and congratulations for coming up with such an ambitious plan. I look forward to seeing your road trip blog.

You will find this forum full of experts who have given me (another new owner, but with severely limited expertise) a great deal of help.

There have been threads on tools and spare parts:

I also carry a compressor and a battery jump start pack.

Good luck.

If it has not been done, swap out the S&S rectifier for the Harley unit.
Peace of mind.

John.

+1 on this. Cheap and apparently nasty regulators from China via eBay just work, the standard one just fails. Best change it in comfort before you have to.
Some imperial and metric Allen keys.
Same for spanners; car is mainly metric, engine mainly imperial.
A trimmed down spanner that fits on the inner tube securing nuts (17mm from memory)
Plug type puncture repair kit for the rear, you don't want to have to change it if you can avoid it outside of a comfortable and reasonably well kitted out workshop. But take a couple of spare rear spindle nut split pins with you, they can fight back when re-used though are usually ok.
Last autumn I did a 4000 mile trip round Europe and only used three Allen keys in the whole journey. One to drain the oil catch tank that I have fitted and two to screw back together a cheapo H4 headlamp LED that had vibrated apart. I had an extensive and heavy toolkit with me, virtually all of which remained untouched.
Exhaust mount bobbins; take a set of them, they have a tendency to fall apart after a while.
Duct tape and some lock wire will sort out many things when necessary.
Enjoy the trip...how many miles are you looking at?

Good stuff!
The trim bolts for the arm rest on mine came undone on a road trip. Dab of loctite might help.
Inner tubes are a must, and maybe a map of Morgan dealers plus a question to them in advance what if any parts they keep in stock (I suspect not much, if any) - maybe add S&S dealer map too.
And have a backup plan (eg funds for a 2nd hand MX5? wink )

A rear tyre puncture can be a major headache on a long trip (or any trip for that matter). Add a puncture prevention fluid to the tyre. In the UK I use this OKO brand but I'm not sure it's available in the US.

This goopy stuff is NOT to be confused with the aerosol type that you squirt in AFTER you get a puncture.

Good luck with the trip - it sounds like a belter!

Sounds great lucky chap.
Here is a start
screw driver with a multi head
Hammer sticky plaster for the odd cut finger
Torch, spare wire, fuses, wire cutters, pliers .
A PRAY BOOK ( in case it breaks down ) AND YOUR PLASTIC innocent

The lads can add to the list.

Google RH03MOG. He crossed the U.S. in 2016 over 3 weeks and maintained a daily blog. Good person to contact regarding extras to take along. Have fun. Let me know where you’ll be in Wisconsin.
