My Morgan With Ford 1600 engine twice stopped whilst on the way . On examination I touch the coil thin wires and off I go. This morning it did the same thing and whilst it was working I touched a thin wire from the coil to the distributor with a connector in between, like a bolt with two boot rubber covers, and it stopped again. Can someone tell me what this part is? When someone came to check he confirmed that the coil was not working so I replaced it and hope all will be well. I had the original coil fitted of 1980. Your comments are appreciated.

I cannot find any reference to the part in question ie like a bolt that slides into a connector with two rubber boot covers in between a thin black wire from the negative pole on the coil to the distributor.

Could this be a ballast resistor? The original coil should be labelled as to whether it is a ballast coil or not. With a ballast system, the voltage to the coil is reduced by the resistor for normal running. The ballast coil is designed to give a normal spark with less than 12 volts applied. But there is usually a second feed or some means to by pass the resistor when you operate the starter, so that the coil then gets full battery power to improve starting.

From your description the thin wire is probably the low tension cable from the coil to the distributor. Depending on the age of your Morgan it may have a 'contact breaker' in the distributor, that is connected to the coil via the piece of wire that you describe. The fault may be a bad connection somewhere in the wire (most likely at the connector at one or the other end of the wire) or a faulty connection within the coil (from the 'bolt' to the copper wire of the primary circuit within the coil). If you apply pressure to the 'bolt' (stud) on the old coil do you notice any movement, is it loose ?
The fault should be easy to trace using a multimeter. The resistance between the two bolts (studs) on the old coil should be just a few ohms. If you apply pressure the the 'bolts' on the coil, while measuring the resistance it should stay constant.
The resistance from end to end of the wire from the distributor to the coil should be effectively zero ohms. Again you can apply stress to the cable while measuring the resistance to see if there is any change.

In the absence of a clinical test with a multimeter I guess the practical test is to start the car and wiggle that thin wire to see if the problem still exists

I have just found out that the wire going into the So called ballast can slide out and I am sure that the this could be the source of the problem. Not sure a photo will help as it may vary depending on manufacturer and may not be an original fitment anyway.. Ford engines from that era were certainly fitted with ballast resistors but usually in the wire from the ignition to the coil rather than coil to distributor. If your component IS a ballast resistor, it may well be in good condition but simply a poor connection. If connections are found to be satisfactory after wiggling them around with the engine running, the next step is to replace the ballast resistor itself as they are not expensive. You still haven’t said if the old coil was labelled to say a ballast is required (or another clue could be if it is rated at about 9 volts)

Thank you for your comments. The original coil does not have anything printed or embossed but it is an original Lucas coil. I did Google about the ballast resistor but I did not see anything similar to what I have. In fact as you said I did wiggle the part and the engine stopped. That's when I realized that fitting a new coil is not solving the problem. So I removed the new coil again and replaced it with the original. Then I fitted a short wire from the negative of the coil to the part to bypass the connection . The wire on the part seems to be push on. I have tried to give as much detail as possible maybe someone has the same in between connector as I would like to know what this is. Thanks to all once again.

Learn how a Points Ignition Works. Lots written about it and it is amazingly simple. BUT! learning a little bit about Electronics/Electrical for somebody with none of the background can be "witchcraft". The way I did it:

Coils produce lots of electrical Power to drive the Spark Plugs.
The - side goes to the distributor by a small wire.
The + side connects to the ignition switch.
In the distributor is a switch (points) that ground the coil.

That is all that is needed to make Your Ford engine run. BUT!
But it has been found out that the points will quit working at too much voltage.
So a Ballast Resistor must be installed between the ignition switch and the + side of the coil. In this mode it will be hard starting but will run OK. and for a long time.

So get on GOOGLE and see if You can find some suitable information. If You can't get back to Me or some other Morgan DIY.

The other item is wiring connections. For 30 years I just went to the Auto Parts store and bought connectors and the tools to use them. Now I buy un insulated connectors from a Marine or Aircraft Supplier and the proper tool, and use heat shrink to insulate and plastic ties to bundle. I do not like wiring harnesses because I can not see which wire goes where.
