Guys, I've got a question...
One of my friends whom recently visited China, and made friend with this lady, fairly educated and could speak good english and french, and they have kept in contact thru emails.
But he gets quite suspicious when he recieved her last email...
Heres how it read...
Hello Mr. XX,
Thanks for your reply. How are you? and how is your family.
As you're a british chinese, I just trust you. In fact, a family in London asked me to custody their fund--the amount of 2.6 millions GBP,the couples died, and no c\hild,it's the reason that I have to move to London soon to deal with my case. I followed the procedure with a financial firm and British government last year, but there were some problems, my american friend in London asked me to come to London and handle all by myself.
I need the amount of 8000usd to deal with my case, so my american friend promised me to give me a hand, but he has to move to the USA so that he can sell one of his houses(he has two houses in the USA).Could you please meet my friend-this american in Manchester if he can move there?I'll ask him to call you or send you an email before leaving from London.
I'll start to do an investment in UK or in HK/China, if you're interested in my projects, we can work together with this american friend, or you have any idea of any investment, we can do it, if it's a good project. How do you think?
I'm looking forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.
Best Regards xxx
He shown me her email ask what I think of it, she did not ask for any money, or bank account etc etc.
Naturally, I would come here for you guys advices, so do you think it has scam written all over it????

She does ask for money - she has said that she needs 8000 USD. Sure she may not have asked directly, but any response will see the American 'friend' let her down at the crucial point so she will 'turn to you for help' (and $8000).
This is just the classic 419 scam made famous by the Nigerians using the web over the last 15 years.
The set up works in various different context but boils down to "I have a lot of money to move out the country, but have expenses to deal with before it arrives"
Victim sends 'expenses' never receives a penny. The scam keeps working as it plays on the greed of the victim.
The old adage 'if it looks to good to be true it probably is' always holds..
So yes - walk away, or check out 419eater.com and have some fun.

SO if the money is in a UK bank it can be substantiated easily. It will be released after probate has been completed and provided the people involved have can show the bank executors information. So all they need to do is send you the correct information which you can validate with the bank independently. Regardless of the "friends" location the death of a person in the UK would lead to this paperwork trail. What makes me laugh is that in that position the bank would be bending over backwards to "assist" the person through a high interest short term bridging loan to allow them to "release" the money. So we see one simple process. 1. Meet 2. Become friendly 3. Work slowly to build trust 4. Test trust 5. Go for broke As Mr Tony said, the IPR of this scam was Nigerian based for many years. I am just surprised that Chinese people are trying it on, I had a higher opinion of them than that. Maybe they have miniturised it and put it into mass production and I missed something There are some fantastic "reverse" scams that have been played on these programs. You tell them you are happy to do this but they must join your "religion" as that level of faith needs to be established prior to you commiting to assist them. You then ask for pictures of them doing odd things (weird places at strange times of day, odd clothing, posting odd items like fingernails) in return for your trust and just string them out. I got one of them to 11 events before they went nuts at me. They don't like it 'up'em Mr Mannering. Run quickly.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Whoa hang on guys I personally think you're all jumping to conclusions and generalising enourmously. If you re-read the letter and take a little longer to ponder, whilst it certainly looks like a scam I can see signs of something else. Sometimes you just need to look closer at the detail. What you must do sorry, your friend must do, is work on the fact that she has put two kisses at the bottom. I would quickly email her back, telling her she should dump the Septic, and send her the money pronto. Personally I would also tell her, in as nice an American accent as you can muster (she obviously likes the accent) "Babe, there's more where that came from" (NB if you can simultaneously thrust your groin forward at the precise moment of uttering "that" whilst pulling your arms back it tends to sound a bit more sincere). This way, I'm pretty sure you sorry, your friend, can get jiggy with the lovely lady. Good luck, to 'your friend'
Cheers

People are still falling for this? As Alistair says it's easy enough to check... Stringing the b*****ds along can be a good game... Somewhere I read a long series of emails where the UK chap actually got $20 out of the scammer... Does your friend like fishing Kin? See how long before the line breaks? Cheers,
