My steering wheel is about 20 degrees off from straight while driving. The car tracks well. How big of a job is it to change the wheel position? I assume it would be done down in the steering gear.. Thanks in advance.

Fairly straightforward, you just need to undo the clamping bolt which clamps the steering column to the rack, pull column off the splined shaft and rotate the the required number of splines refit and retighten.

I thought so, but hadn't gotten under there yet. Thanks.

As above plus there is a fair chance that the track rods may well be adjusted to give good tracking but they are uneven so the last bit of adjustment to get the car to go straight with the wheel in the straight ahead position is by equal adjustments to the track rods.

You can get away with a bit wheel repositioning with a rack and pinion, but if your car uses a steering box the wheel must be centered when the box is at it's center "tight" point then the drag link is ajusted so the car goes straight down the road with the wheel centered. Failure to observe this routine will result in excessive freeplay at the wheel. If you suspect that the wheel has ever been moved from it's original position on the hub you must start by determining the steering box center and go from there. again, this does not apply to R&P setups.

Phil

Good opportunity to have the top spoke vertical if you have standard three spoke wheel. The view of instrument nearest wheel is vastly improved, and join in leather grip is at the bottom.

Cannot think why factory install it 180° from above but they refused to install it the safest way (IMHO) during build.

Was only thinking the same thing yesterday when I went out for a spin in mine!
Reminds me to chase MMC for the Brooklands wheel I ordered some time ago...

Question: How did the wheel get 20 degrees off? Look down at the middle of the rack, there is a hole. Place a pin in the hole and move the steering wheel back and forth until the pin drops into the hole in the rack itself. This is the center or the rack. Is the wheel still 20 degrees off? If so find the center of the frame cross member and from there measure to the tie rod end or the disc rotor. Are both measurements the same? If not correct this, and is the wheel still off. Then measure the toe in. If none of this corrects the problem you may have a bent or broken frame as I did.
Good Luck

They don't all have the centring hole!
I had to do some careful measuring to get my rack centred, to allow me to equalise the track rods, so that I could set the toe then a small tweak to the rods to get the wheel bang on straight ahead for the first time in four and a half years!
