The weak springs appeared to be early-on in the 4 leaf period. My 2012 had them, and they were awful, although that wasn't so apparent until I changed them. We toured Scotland with the old springs and that's what persuaded me to get on and do it.
Otherwise leaf springs go on and on unless they break. My first leaf spring job was on an MG Midget. I broke the main leaf on day 1 of ownership, and went through a few in the following years. Could it be a MAM problem

I have done a lot of experimenting with springs. 5 leaf, 6 leaf and 7 leaf. Peter Mulberry advised me to take them off, clean them and re-grease them. 3 Morgans?? Well I have R&R'd them a lot. Cleaning and Greasing them per PM was very productive. But not sure I learned much from swapping. Other than making them too soft. That was a huge mistake.

I would appreciate your collective thoughts re my 1989 +4 rear leaf springs.
I discovered recently a nice concave rounded indent in the wooden support/cross member on the underside of the rear parcel shelf which looks suspiciously like the imprint of the diff, judging from its position. Since then I have noticed an occasional mellow thud when going over some holes or bumps. I use chain oil each year on the springs to keep them supple (I hope) but wonder if it is time to get them changed. From what I can see they do not look to be obviously sagging or broken. The next service/MOT is in a couple of months at BHM. Think I should just wait and get them to have a look or arrange to have it done asap?

I had a Bedford HA van as a first car. Based on the old Viva. It had a single transverse leaf spring on the front. I had to replace it due to damage. Not particularly difficult but I used two jacks to ease the spring end into place after fitting the opposite end. Access was ok with the front up on stands. From what I have seen both in the factory and my own car a Mog requires more dismantling for access and refitting. Not too bad I would imagine provided it is thought through and suitable means to manipulate the spring end is available.

Thankyou DaveW for the response. I thought/hoped it wasn't something that needed doing urgently but I needed an experienced persons reassurance. I'm sure Len or Keith will advise accordingly when I see them for the MOT.

For the 8 years I owned my '76 4/4 the diff used to regularly clout the rear parcel shelf (particularly when loaded for touring). I never worried about it. Had I kept the car longer, I might have considered replacing the springs. Suggest you look into 4 leaf 4 seater springs if you carry a lot of kit, should your springs be suffering from wear/age.

Suggest you look into 4 leaf 4 seater springs if you carry a lot of kit, should your springs be suffering from wear/age. That was the solution I went for. Makes a big (positive) difference to the way the car drives.
