Hello all. I got my Morgan (2015 Plus 4) late last year and joined this excellent site to share and learn - more learn actually.

Well I'm a tinkerer and one thing I noticed on warm days when moving along air out of the heater was cold (when set cold) but in stationary traffic it started blowing warm and then cold when moving again. I assumed heat soak from the engine bay.

But on my car the top of the heater box (intake) has seals MOST of the way round to seal the intake from the engine bay. At the front there is a gap in the sealing foam on each side of the bonnet centre rod. so there's a gap of about 5 inch by 1 1/4 inch. It seems that when stationary and the engine bay is not being "flushed" the hot air could get into the heater intake - hence warm air.

Questions is this a standard "feature" and has anybody noticed it apart from me (being a detailed person), and, I plan to close the gap with soft foam to improve the seal between engine bay and heater intake.

Any comments appreciated and be gentle with me I'm new to all this (hope Ive posted in the right place as well).

Was going to post pictures but not sorted that yet...

Dave W is the person to give you the full story, but from other posts here it seems that the sponge "seal" isn't very effective and as you say, hot air from the engine bay is pulled into the heater.

The causes of leakage are the gap you mention, and also the seal may not be touching the underside of the bonnet! I know some people have applied a sealing strip to the underside of the bonnet to ensure a good seal with the seal on the box.
Lining it all up isn't easy as you cannot see where things are, or are not, touching....!!

I too have a 2015 Plus 4 with the same issue.

When I first bought it I took it back to the dealer as part of my "snagging" list.

They checked it over but couldn't find a fault so I assumed that it was the usual Morgan diagnosis of "they all do that sir".

It will be interesting to know if it is in fact the "usual" or if others have an issue as it is having it's annual service on Tuesday and maybe if a solution is offered they can fettle it.

Mine is a 2015 +4 and dosen't really do cold air, rather varying degrees of warm from slightly cool up to nuclear hot, my sponge seal is a bit squashed about so could be improved,

Personally hasn't bothered me too much as I tend to drive roof down as much as possible, I find I get enough air through the sliding windows if I need to cool things a bit.

Welcome Biglewey, whereabouts are you located?

The images below are from one of my 'How To' posts.

It's not so much a fault, more of a quirk, and withing ten miles of picking up our Plus 4, when stuck in traffic at the Dartford Crossing, we had red hot air from the heater set cold - it was June.

Earlier Morgans have two sets of seals - one for each bonnet with a seal each side of the bonnet hinge. Someone on here, may be Gambalunga - has reverted to this arrangement. Eventually it became a single 'panel edge' lipped seal with a gap at the hinge.

Then it became a rough and ready sponge seal. On my current Plus 4 and my previous Plus 4 I've edged this seal both sides with high density neoprene, stuck with contact adhesive. For the top edge I found that leather worked best and together, these mods stiffen the seal no end. Around the hinge it needs to be more forgiving, as the bonnet hinge lips move in an arc across the seal.

The modifications, whichever you chose, make a huge difference.
Oh and extend the seal right back to the bulkhead, because there is a gap there.

From the archive.....................

The heater box seal.............
When we were stuck at the Dartford crossing, it was a hot day and all I could get from the heater vents was hot air. I modified the heater seal on Bumble, and have now done to same here.
This is how it comes, quite a soft sponge but lacking a seal centre around the bonnet hinges and at the bulkhead.

After adding neoprene edges and a leather top, plus some thick neoprene at the centre point it's much better.

Thanks for that post Dave, having nipped out to have a look at mine it is as your first picture but squashed on the strip facing the engine.

Your modification looks like one that even I can manage!

Cheers
