Well folks, following the success of Loire last September and the fact that “she who must be obeyed” enjoyed it ... I have booked the ferry for a two week trip in September ... Cork to Roscoff and back Santander to Roscoff. We will do a night mid Ireland each way on the way to and from home.

I really appreciated the tips for places to see, stay and eat last year, so if there are any suggestions ... bring them on people!

Ian

Used Sarlat la Caneda as a base in the Dordogne last September staying here

Lots of interesting medieval villages within a radius of 30km or so.

Sarlat is indeed lovely but just be warned parking is a nightmare! A canoe trip down the Dordogne is well worth doing - just need to check whether they will be operating in September.

Up near Bordeaux, Arcachon is quite nice (not as nice as the Islede Re up near La Rochelle though), with the huge sand dune (Dune du Pilat) interesting to see and walk on. Again up near Bordeaux, I would really recommend St Emillion (again parking is fun so get there early) and do walking tours of the underground church and a vineyard - both booked from tourist information. The only place that we have been where the pizza restaurant serves wine defined by chateau!

I have not braved Bordeaux since they opened the new wine centre - it looks interesting. But the traffic has tended to put us off a bit.

Are you up there when Circuit de Rempartes is on? Could you stretch the trip up to Angouleme? We're going again this year!

If you get east of Bergerac, towns like Rocamadour, Saint Cyprien and Domme are worth seeing... the road alongside the river has some beautiful views too.

St-Jean-du-Pied-Port a little further south leads towards the Spanish border and some of the most beautiful drives - Never straying more than 100 yards of our Morgan 4/4 enjoy some of our images here:

Agreed. We used to stay just outside Domme very often. La Rocque Gageac and Castelnaud are also well worth a look.

yikes, it's 20 years since I was there... a great market, nice beach, great roads up into the hills.
& cheap petrol just across the border in Spain.
