Taffy,
You cant be that thick, coz you drive an Aero. I'm a complete donkey on the computer as well. Don't worry about it.

aerotaff Do you know which mini pump can be used, there are a few different ones and I believe only 1 version is suitable. It is obviously one of the older ones not available new, but I would like to get a spare myself. I am a long way from help here in N Ireland and having the parts would be useful. Taffy, Where about do you live? T50 had his upgraded by a really good mechanic in Pembroke Dock, but I think he sourced the parts himself. The mini pumps are available on eBay as refurbes. Plus the landlord where we have our noggins once a month upgraded his many years ago. If it's the sort of castillated bit that meshes on the pump and wares on the series one, I have in my garage one of the last ones that Morgan sold. When my steering eventually goes I will be doing this upgrade, but if it's the bit i think has worn your welcome to it for what I paid. If I can help in anyway p.m. me. They're great cars, but these gremlins can be a bit of a bugger. Aerotaff.

Hi Lightsphere, I think the stearing pump is off the mini from years 2000-07, but will have to check to make sure for you. My first series I had the up-grade already done, but my present one which is now 16 years old with 38K on the clock still has the original set up, except for a new castelleted bit. Hoping to go on a long 4K foreign trip next year, down as far as Italy, do you think I should up grade my stearing set up? There can't be many with the original set up left on the road. There will be plenty of twists and turns next year on the passes. Should I take a chance? Aerotaff

There are different generations of the Mini pump One type overheats and shuts down, and the Aero is not a temperature friendly place to be I have a limited source of new ones of the correct type
The wiring connectors are unique to the pump, as is the hydraulic connector You also need to get the two mounting brackets which are no longer available new
I would suggest that the rack is flushed through with new fluid , most of the examples I’ve come across, the power steering fluid is black, either from overheating or age
Moving the reservoir to a more accessible location is also a good idea

Hi All, Again, many thanks for all the response's much appreciated. Update is I am renting a trailer and taking to Alan Claridge at Witney on Friday. I am sure he will be in touch with Simon (SiFab) once he finds the root cause of the problem? Thanks T

Aerotaff, Thanks for the extra information, The power steering just puts doubt in the mind, if I had the parts and someone able to take it on I would upgrade. I was hoping Simon was putting a package together for this, but I suspect it is not easy. Aerotaff, I was told by a good UK dealer that you can test the original steering pump for wear, and that wil give you some advance warning of imminent failure. My S1 had about 42,500 miles on the clock when I sold it and the wear was not excessive.
To test you need to get your hand down onto the drive cog for the pump. If you have more than about 1/2in of play (on the circumference of the cog) then failure is imminent. On mine at sale I had less than 1/3 inch.
Personally I'd stick with the original mechanical pump even if you have to get it repaired.
Cheers

Taffy, following my last post, did you manage to have a look at the drive cog?
Cheers
