For use in the south of France where the ambient temperatures can sometimes be over 40º, both Raphy and I wanted the extra protection of a 20W60 oil over a 20W50. When my car was working, I measured the oil temperature after a long hard run. It was around 110º. Whereas this is a problem for the oil lines that Morgan fit, which are only rated to 100º, it is fine for the oil, rated to 165º. I had a very helpful discussion with Motul's competition department. They felt that the 20W60 300V Le Mans oil was ideal for an air cooled engine, being operated in high ambient temperatures.

PS During the rebuild, I have had an oil temperature gauge added, so I will keep a close eye on the oil temperature. If I feel it is getting on the high side, I will add an oil cooler to the return to the oil tank side of the system. The problem is a suitable location for the cooler. Down in front of the engine, is too vulnerable to parking idiots and in the grille gets no cool air. I think mounted on the side just behind the wishbones might be the best place.

Wilson there has been discussion about fitting an oil cooler. Here is one thread.

Yes Aberdeenshire is cooler than South of France, sometimes that is a good thing, 24C is enough for me. Minus 10C is less good but not driving the M3W then.

Tim,

I looked at that thread before my chassis failed. Fitting an oil cooler where the thread suggests down in front of the crankcase, would be very risky in France. There in rural areas, as where I live, many folks still park their rusty old heaps by "the contact method". No parking bleepers for them; the crunch of crumpling bodywork serves just as well.

I thought that was the parking method in most of France? smile

I had the same repair one or two days after Dab of oppo in Le Mans, I was happy to get the last unit :), no problems since then

I get the impression that your rebuild is costing more than the original price of the vehicle!

Sadly I suspect you are correct. It is all "apparently" finished apart from the new HD regulator being wired up. Another forum member who has been assisting the garage with the rebuild (probably doing most of the work), is very kindly going to fetch me from my house in the second week of April to go and collect the M3W from beside the Paul Ricard circuit. We are then going on to lunch at the Hotel Ruhl just outside Marseille, where I think the best bouillabaisse in the world is served. Spectacular views as well towards the island with Chateau d'If on it (Count of Monte Cristo).
