I use Google Maps on my iphone. Better than any TomTom or Garmin in my experience. In fact I use it in all our cars, even the Galaxy which has its own Ford satnav built in.

The benefits of Google Maps? Free, never needs updating (always updating), knows where all the holdups are (courtesy of other phones in cars - this is so much better than the TMA on normal satnavs), recalculates brilliantly and gives you alternatives to choose or ignore. Plan your route at home before going, and it stores the route so even if you lose 3g/4g coverage it still works but minus the traffic info until you get a signal again. I've found it to be 99% reliable on routing, unlike any other satnav I've used. Works anywhere in the world, including China and Russia!

So all you need is an inexpensive phone holder - I use a suction one with a small cup that doesn't interfere with the screen much, and its two-piece arm lets the phone sit below the level of the screen. Bought from Amazon. Keep your phone plugged in with a USB cable to avoid battery drain.

Honestly I wouldn't even consider any other solution.

nputtick, I can underwrite all points and Google maps benefits you have mentioned. But there is one property that makes me lose my mind and I wonder if others have experienced the same thing:
Either I'm too stupid for the settings or it's actually so that the route I've chosen is suddenly and unexpectedly changed while driving by GMaps.

This happened regularly and I didn't use Gmaps anymore. Gmaps doesn't stick to the way you want to drive. In Italy it happened to me that I chose beautiful landscapes. But Gmaps then decided to take me past factories and scrap yards because Gmaps made new calculations all the time when driving and it wanted to save a few minutes or miles.

You can't control it while driving unless you stop.
Is there a setting that keeps my route? („Avoid highways“ etc. I know of course).

Alternatively, you would have to enter the smallest partial connections, from place to place. And that would be too much trouble.

I find this too. Bloody infuriating. When planning a route, I prefer to use the MyDrive app on my computer and then download it to my TomTom.

Google Maps is ok for getting from A to B, but not if you want to decide the way you get there.

Isn't Waze the mapping tool of choice of the upwardly mobile?
