I'm contemplating fitting the Avon CR6ZZ 175/70 R15 road legal competition tyre for my MTWC Sporting exploits this season.

Its pricey - thank goodness I only need one!!, but maybe worth it as I've got a set of Avon AM23 race tyres for the front

Has anyone had any experience of this tyre on any car?

You’re not kidding they’re pricey OUCH.

Shame a 185/55x15 won’t fit as the Yokohama Nerva AD08R looks like a good choice for the money.

With all of the rear tires needing replaced, it would make sense that someone like G56 Garage would come up with a single sided cantilevered rear swingarm.

This would allow a quick bolt on/off rear wheel just as Goldwing GL1800 or BMW 1600 might use. Upgrading to a rear disc with an integrated park brake would just be a joyful plus to the conversion.

Just think guys, swapping out a rear tire/tyre would consist of just jacking up the rear end and unbolting the four lugs nuts and off comes the rear wheel. Replacing caliper pads would also be a breeze.

How much more fun would it be to have a quick detach rear wheel? How many more burnouts would you do if you could make the tire swap an hour project???

We have used CR6ZZ on various classic Ferraris for things like Tour de France/Tour Britannia over the years and they are excellent. Good grip with a very progressive slip angle into slide and they wear well. I wish they made them in the size for my RSR 911; I would buy them in a shot. When I wear out the new Dunlop SP Sport, that is what I will fit on the back of my M3W. I now have a car big enough to take one out with me from the UK. If you think they are expensive in the UK, you should see what the Avon supplier in France charges!

I am surprised with your choice of the AM23 tyre for the front. This is a racing motorcycle tyre, where the load characteristics and vectors are totally different to a car, hence its rounded profile. Would it not be better to use a car specific race tyre, with a flat tread profile, like the Excelsior Comp H (what I am using) or the more expensive 3 stud Dunlop classic racers? The Excelsiors are very good. A 450-500 or 550 x 18" on suitable 18" aluminium rims would give you a lot of grip at the front. Wilson

I ran AM26 tyres on the front last year, which are a motorbike road tyre. Much improved grip over the original 19” Avon’s snd Blockleys.

AM23’s are used by all the fast MTWC racers and the speed they can overtake me on the corners is incredible at times

It’s a case of ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’
