just been reading a thread elsewhere about the high maintenance costs of owning a McLaren F1. scared

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsKDGdcb6BQ

It would seem most things necessitate a (very expensive) trip back to the factory in the UK (or one of two BMW specialist centres in the USA).There seem to be a number of dodgy assumptions/incorrect details from the (above) owner - but clearly, he got the 'expensive' bit right!

Jay Leno obviously decided not to bother......

the car apparently cost him $800k to buy. The last one sold went for $15m. Covers a bit of maintenance.

Interesting story I once heard about the F1. When one came into McLaren for some maintenance and they needed to access the ECUs, they had to go onto ebay to buy an old windows 3.1 PC because thats what had been used to write the software. Illustrates the dodgy future of modern supercars.

Very interesting interview with the owner.... I heard a similar story from a Veyron owner.

One of the advantages of owning a Ford GT was that some of the service parts were very cheap.

The world is a crazy place.

Whilst the Coupe does sometimes make me go a little mad when it drops a sprocket it does make you wonder how value is calculated.

They only made 20 or so?
It is hand made out of aluminium and wood
It needs regular servicing!
It is stunningly pretty.
It is quick (not supercar fast admittedly)
It definitely needs some articulation to get in and out of

I figure we should be allowed to sell them for at least £1.2m as well.

Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Not 100% sure it's true, but I read somewhere that for any journey over 200 miles, it's cheaper to airfreight a Veyron rather than drive it.

Probably depends on the speed used during the journey? smile

I think a lot of it is about tyre wear, Graham. A set of tyres costs $17k, and having them changed costs $70k. But of course speed does come into it. At 250mph the tyres wear out in 15 minutes, would you believe. Crazy.

Jay Leno gave all the details of his Mac F1 in his page in Octane mag some months back. It did indeed make for scary reading. Thank goodness I didn't buy one !!! laugh2
