Local one here not too helpful - hadn't heard of Morgan and said the 'standard' stuff would do for LR Discovery - at twenty quid a gallon the price didn't seem standard to me. Asked about OATS types versus ethylene glycol - must have thought I was looking for horse food.......

I wouldn't mention Morgan at all. Just ask for an 03 Rover V8 engine. It's an old design so I'd tend towards conventional antifreeze.

Land Rover switched to OAT antifreeze in 2002, - at least for TD5, so suspect same for V8, OAT is usually pale red, glycol blue, I'll try and find spec sheet and advise tomorrow

Thanks Easter - I'd read elsewhere about the different colo(u)rs and numerous 'formulations' and would suspect at this vintage it might be OAT, so was hoping the LR guy would have known. One school of thought is it's not just the alumin(i)um engine, but the type of solder used in the radiator (assuming mine isn't ally as well - ?). Also, if it is OAT, and I follow Dave's suggestion and revert to 'conventional' I will need to flush thoroughly - anyone know if these engines are subject to airlocks when draining/filling?

I did a bit of searching on LR and Cobra replica forums last night. The general concensus seems to be don't mix the two, and do a thorough flush if changing over. Halfords apparently sell a ready diluted OAT which will allegedly mix with glycol based coolant, but I wouldn't risk that. OAT is red/orange, so it's easy to identify. It is also good for five years, rather than the two specified for glycol coolant. Having said that I don't know anybody who routinely changes antifreeze at two years, any more than changing brake fluid regularly!!
Airlocks? Plenty about this on the Cobra forum, but my MGBV8 didn't suffer with airlocks, even when filled from dry. The only thing I had to do was bleed the top heater hose which was the highest point on the system.

Texaco XLC [OAT]is recommended for all LR Buick V8's from '99 m/yr, MMC could have still been using glycol though, especially if it was cheaper! I would flush and re-fill with OAT

In my case, I've combined both intervals - it's a 2003 - naughty
Just spoke to Tony at MMC delaer in L.A. and he uses 'green' i.e. glycol based. He did offer that the (brass) rad is on rubber isolation pads so he always adds a grounding wire (earth strap) from rad to chassis to avoid electrolytic corrosion - seems like a good idea.

ps - Tony also mentioned he's only seen red (OAT) in the newer (2005) Roadsters here in USA.
Guess I'll know when I drain it, just wanted to know what I might have ready for the refill - could always get 3 gallons of each type I suppose!
