Have you only heard the rattle when in the vehicle, or have you gotten out and walked around while the rattle was audible to try and locate the area from which it is coming?
I thought I had a rattle coming from the front of the car (while sitting in it) and it ended up being that the roll hoops needed their attachment bolts tightened.
A failing Harley style compensator sounds like a tin can full of bolts being shaken about, more than an average rattle.

Yes, I've gotten out and walked around it. It is definitely emanating from the front of the car (it is distinctly farther away when you are behind it). That being said, it is hard to tell if it is in the engine area proper of perhaps further behind it.
It's helpful to know that the compensator issues are more like "a tin can full of bolts"; this is not anywhere near that. It is distinct, but not extremely loud, more like a single bolt in a heavy metal can.
If I can figure out how to upload, I might put up a recording.

My rig developed an “at idle” rattling noise when the nut holding the Centa unit outer housing to the end of the crankshaft loosened. It made a rattle or jingle sound much like a Ducati dry clutch.

See when it does it. At idle in first with the clutch down if It’s silent but appears when in neutral with the clutch up then the only difference is the compensator is spinning in neutral and not when in 1st. Gently lift the clutch in 1st without throttle will load the drive enough to stop any chatter

The compensator spins with the engine at all times that it is running; the clutch is between the output of the compensator and the gearbox.

As daft as it sounds try the exhaust heat shield domed screws. It could be the heat shields rattling if they have come loose.

What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

The Miata gearbox is renown for a rumble/ rattle in neutral, many reports if you Google it. Something I am investigating in mine.
