The rear springs on my car always used to knock/tap on the plywood healboard when loaded. The springs pass through a little cutout in the healboard and would regularly make contact, even after I fitted brand new springs. That could save some people a lot of effort and money  .

My 4/4 Anniversary from March 2012 was thought to be at the end of the weak spring era. My 4/4 was Dec-13 - Jan-14 build and had weak rear springs? Maybe they found a leftover pair at the back of stores....... Would not be a surprise!

Raised the car today and took a look under it. The only suspicious spot I've found is this:  Since there is also an impression on the leaf spring, it looks as if it is striking here. What will it be like when we're on the road with our luggage?

Yes that looks to be the contact point on the heelboard. Mine used to contact there on both sides. Could be quite scary sometimes.

When I changed the rear springs on my 2012, I added a couple of strips of neoprene to dampen the knock. But with new springs it never recurred. Yours only looks to be catching very slightly.

Is this something to worry about? IMO I think it is dangerous. The worst scenario for me was driving on what appeared to be flat straight roads at say 60 or 70mph. Very occasionally if the road had a very specific but benign dip or undulation that coincided with what appeared to be a critical speed it would result in a huge suspension crash that would take you completely by surprise. Very scary.

What would happen if you filled the gap with a wedge shaped block of wood? Would that shorten and therefore stiffen the springs? Nick

Why not cut the plywood a bit to make room for the spring.
