M16 Plus4- will not start, all ignition lights on but imobiliser light still flashing. On turn ignition fully nothing happens. The only way to start car is to put battery on charge for 4 minutes. Repeat process but the imobilers flashing light clears allowing the engine to start. This will only last a day for the following morning the same fault.
Any one had a simular problem.

Does the battery discharge when the car is left overnight?

Try cleaning up all the chassis connections, or as a trial connect a jump lead between negative terminal on battery to engine block or electrics housing (assuming negative earth obviously)

Change the ECU & get a replacement without I think it is pin 14 so the immobiliser is not involved anymore in the process.

If its not the battery, as JohnV6 says, change the ECU, the M16 was unlikely to have an ECU with an mobiliser as standard as the following early T16 did not have an mobiliser.
My T16 has MKC10034e the one that followed was MKC10115e, both these are non immobiliser but best to check what the M16 was originally fitted with.

Perhaps an M16 owner on here can give you the ECU number fitted as standard?

Phil

2 things for you to try :

Firstly check the battery in the key fob is not past its sell-by-date. I had that a few years ago , and on replacement it was fine.

Secondly try pulling the immobiliser fuse and see if that cures the issue. Not sure which number it is on your +4 , but I am pretty sure that MMC were using a Rover-sourced immobiliser at the time (from a Discovery?) and it will be wired in a pretty standard manner.
On my 1999 +8 the immobiliser will drain the battery to a non-start level in about 2 weeks, which is why I connect a top-up charger/conditioner at all times whilst in the garage.

Sounds as though the battery voltage is a bit low, or its on its way out

However If the immobiliser is the same as the plus 8 there are two boxes,
One is called the Spider unit which decodes the ignition key and is notorious for failure due to dry soldered joints internally, these are no longer available - but the main online land rover parts suppliers will sell you linked out plug for around a tenner .

The other (green) box is operated by the key fob, this sends a constant stream of data to the ECU, if the data is interrupted the engine dies or is inhibited from starting. There are people who will check out the box for £25 and carry out any repairs.

our T16 year 2000 mog has 1 Rover ECU with immobiliser combined. the key fob must be pressed to extinguish the red led on the centre of the dash or you can turn the engine over as much as you like and she wont fire up until the red led is out!

There is a utility on the web that you can use to read fault codes and check out the ecu / read sensors etc.

text as follows

MEMS_Diag is an application designed to communicate with pre-OBD Rover engine management systems (ECU).
Modular Engine Management System (MEMS) was used on many cars in the 1990s built by the Rover group (models equipped with K-Series petrol engine)

Currently only MEMS 1.6 and 1.9 (1.3 added as a test) are supported, later versions are OBD2 compliant so they're not in the scope of this project

Implemented features:

- Realtime engine parameters (rpm, map, ignition advance, coolant temp, inlet temp, oxygen sensor, fuel trim/correction and more...)

- Retrieve and erase error codes

- DataGrid view (numerical/table display)

- GraphView (selectable parameters, multiple series)

- Data logging, csv format (available in full version only)

- Adaptations (rpm idle, ignition offset, idle fueling trim)

- Virtual calculations (MAF g/s, Fuel Consumption)

- GPS logging

In order to use this software, the following components are required:

- Android device (smartphone), minimum OS version 3.1+ (USB host access)

- USB port

- the so-called "USB OTG" cable

In addition to the above, depending on the MEMS version, you also need:

for MEMS 1.9:

- FTDI-based (FT232) 12V K-Line interface (USB->OBD2 socket), commonly known as VAG-cable/VAG-KKL. These cables are widely available on ebay etc. Make sure it's build using the FTDI USB chip, perhaps PL2303 should also work but I haven't been able to test it. Avoid products based on CH340 chipset (reason being: there's one missing but crucial function not yet implemented in the driver)

for MEMS 1.3/1.6:

- Any USB-to-TTL converter, again, the most popular are FTDI FT232 and PL2303. Remember that MEMS 1.6 uses 5V logic (depending on the quality of the converter circuit a 3.3 V may also work)

So far the following ECU have been verified to work correctly:

MKC103610 (MEMS 1.6)

MKC101610 (MEMS 1.6)

MKC104393 (MEMS 1.9, LandRover Freelander 1.8 Petrol 99')

Please try the "lite" version before purchasing the full edition. This is important to verify that your hardware interface is compatible.
