With my previous S1 Roadster I deliberately removed some spring return tension as the clutch pedal is too heavy in action for me

I once stripped down the master cyl and it has a return spring within the two chamber seals and 'self returns' on it's own - quite strongly in fact, making re-assembly a bit of an acquired skill

So as others have said, if you don't use the pedal as a heavy foot rest you will be fine, & enjoy a lighter clutch

I would speculate that the spring’s function is to always ensure a healthy return force for the pedal should the mechanism have any issues. The pedal mechanism is quite crude and needs lubrication. If there was no return spring and the mechanism gradually became stiff/sticky through wear or had alignment issues then the clutch might suffer. If Morgan could get away with the saving of not fitting a spring I’m sure they would. My plan was always to replace the broken spring.

PS – If it was to facilitate a foot rest I’m sure it would be a chargeable option

Ok, I will consider to replace the spring. Does anybody know whether it is a DIY job? Basically I saw only 2 srews on the left and on the right fixing the bar on which the brake and clutch pedals are sitting, so therefore it seems not be too complicated...

Hi Karsten. It’s not a difficult job at all but you do have to be nimble to get into the foot well and have long arms to reach both sides of the 4 bolts. The clevis pins and split pins are easily removed and there are no surprise spring forces on the clutch or brake shafts. Basically when the 4 bolts are out and the 2 main shaft locking bolts are loosened the thing comes out with ease. Re-assembly is easy but remember not to do the 4 bolts up too tight as you will crush the plywood floor. And go careful if you have coloured carpets as it is quite a messy greasy assembly.

Just to clarify, I DID replace the spring, but I just removed some of it's tension, I'm not recommending anyone leaves it off

Since reading this post I find that my plus4 has not had a clutch return spring in the five years I have driv it.
