Well, today my John Taylor mirrors arrived.

I can't seem to get my old mirrors out though. I have removed the grub screw and prized the grey plastic collar up the mirror stalk and now both the mirror and stalk are now "wobbly" and loose in the holder. It is as if there is something at the bottom of the stalk within the holder that is attached but I can't seem to get to it. I'm not sure (but could be wrong) that it will make any difference removing the fitting from the door.

Any ideas?

The existing mirrors are round ones put in by the factory when new as an extra and the door fitting is similar to Stewart's above.

I'd suggest running penetrating oil down into the gap, leave overnight.
They can rust inside, the MMC Stock mirror stem wasn't stainless on my old Roadster...

Thanks, but I don't think it is rust. The mirror and stalk turns round and round as though it is screwed into something at the bottom of the holder/sleeve, but no matter how many times I turn it, it doesn't come out. The car is three years old.

On my factory mirror was a small plastic ring attached in a groove at the end of the mirror stalk!

I had to pull a little bit less soft!
The ring is "cutted" so he can be placed in the groove on the stalk. This ring looks a little bit like a tiny piston ring, made of plastic.

This ring should eliminate the gap between the stalk and the mirror base/ holder.

This cut in the ring makes the ring also flexible, so the ring fixes sometimes the stalk at the mirror base! The problem is to get the stalk out of the base and not the base/ holder from the door....

Take the whole thing off the door and use some force.......

You were all exactly right......but you knew that anyway!

The plastic ring was obviously catching on the inside of the arm and all it took was a stiff yank (ooer missus) and out it popped.

These John Taylor ones are slightly smaller than the round ones the factory fitted for me but far better.
