is there any rear end construction difference between the plus 4 and the plus 8? wouldnt the plus 9 bar fit a plus 4?

The chassis would have been wider on the plus 8 in those days, having said that its only the length of the horizontal angle iron that varies as far as I can recollect. I have a towbar on my ‘69 4/4, Factory supplied.

Ray....where are you? Your towbar looks quite solid! no problem with the tow bar, even used to tow microlight caravan. As said if chassis rails are the same width they should fit any model. Mine bolt directly to the chassis rails.
