Wow! Great result, I’ve never had much luck with paint touch up jobs. SWMBO had a gate swing into her Porsche and scratch the wing, I chickened our and paid a mobile guy to do it.
You know that every time you meet a TMer now they’ll be zeroing in on that wing 😉

The real success was the airbrush
I tried masking and using an aerosol spray that I had made up first and it was rubbish - had to sand it all back.
With the airbrush I had to thin the paint down and had so much control, I didn’t need to mask so I could blend it perfectly

Other than the tiniest of drips, it’s as close to perfect as I could have wished for

When I scratched the car my eldest son told me I’d never get it right and that I’d have to get it to a professional

When he saw it last night he just scratched his head, shrugged his shoulders and said “did you do that”? And walked off looking puzzled

That’s success

Airbrushes are wonderful things....

This is an example of how I use one!


I have an Iwata Revolution CR and spray at about 15psi, paint thinned to about the same as thin cream.

I understand cake decoration is also a big use for them, as well as nail painting!!

Not that I would ever attempt such a thing.... but did you have to build the paint up by layers, or is that all in one go?

Might you open a repair business?

My first idea and attempt was to build up the paint in layers by brushing it in the area where the paint was missing but it wasn’t working as the the thickness of the good paint around the damage was too much so I sanded it all back down

Then I bought some high build primer spray, masked the damaged area and sprayed several layers in 20 minute intervals as the instructions on the can

This worked superbly

Then sanded the areas smooth using 1500 grit and then 2500 grit with water

Let it dry overnight and then remasked and used my aerosol spray for the top coat - this was rubbish - the paint was too thick, no control and I got bad orange peel so I took all the masking off again, let it dry overnight and sanded it all back again using 1500 and 2500 grit

Used a tin of paint I had mixed up from The Grove Group who got a camera on the car a while ago, thinned it down to the consistency of milk and put it in my Astek modelling airbrush. No masking this time as I had a fine spray and wanted to blend in the area

One coat with the airbrush as it looked perfect

The small run has shrunk overnight so I’m going to leave it, I don’t think I can improve on the finish

I’ll let it harden over the next few days and then lightly polish the area with Meguairs Ultimate Polish

I won’t wax it for a while but just use a detailer spray as I normally do after a run out
