[quote=yobtaf]@Phil Bleazey The ball valve is placed close to the bonnet. When closed, the bonnet cannot be closed because the lever is in the way.

Andy, sorry to repeat the question but where do you plan to site the cooler?

@Phil Bleazey
I'm not quite sure about the oil cooler yet. There are several options. 1. like everyone, in front of the front bar 2. on the side, standing beside the lights 3. in the hood, with air ducts and an additional fan, and flaps that push the warm air flow outwards or into the footwell.

I run a small tablet permanently connected to the ECU and it monitors amongst other things engine temp. The engine is at its very hottest when driving through traffic around 10-20 mph. Motorway its usually around 200F.
Slow moving traffic and it will get to 250F - hottest I have ever seen it in 30,000 miles.
A good fully synthetic oil should be good for 280F, so I don't think there should be a problem. Its air cooled and designed to tolerate running hot.
I think the ECU records engine temp, along with max revs etc, so you should be able to see the highest recorded temp and compare it with your oil spec.
Good luck and happy motoring

When MMC introduced the Urban Cooling Kit they sent out a letter to existing owners with some before and after temp data Please note, the cost quoted was in 2014 and a short term deal for existing customers - don't expect this to be valid now! I found that before fitting I was often worried about the engine temp in hot weather and skip fire was frankly frightening as it sounded like the engine was falling apart. Since fitting the cooling it runs fine in any weather or traffic jam

I assume you have the ECU from garage 56. What software is on the tablet? The protune from S&S is only available under Win. Do you have any details?

I know you dislike the Urban Cooling Kit Phil, agreed it looks are not great, but it does improve the engine temperature control and that is a problem with any air cooled engine. Unlike the Moto Guzzi, the S&S engine is designed to travel sideways with one cylinder behind the other, not as we have it and the airflow to the back of the engine is not good in our installation, when under power and moving. The cowling does improve airflow to the back and the fan helps when stationary.
I have an oil pressure and temp indicator and under normal conditions it usually shows about 50-60 psi and oil temp between 60 and 80c. On occasions it has been up to 115c and pressure as low as 40psi at this temp, still well within the oils spec. I don’t think that oil coolers etc. are required for our weather conditions, it’s only in slow traffic and very high ambient temperatures, like 30c or more, that I have got up to 115c. since fitting the Urban Cooling Kit. The ECU does need to be flashed to enable the fan, something that your installation was missing I think. The skip fire function should be disabled with the fan system working, you should not have both working together.
I have G56 pipes and filter, you can see daylight through the pipes, no restrictions. They do run very well and the headers don’t glow red at all. More importantly there is no high speed pinking, that was a problem at 4000+ rpm before. I think some "free flowing" standard pipes would get a similar result but your ears may bleed a bit as they are usually very loud. There have been alternatives manufactured with some success, it may be worth talking to KBMOG, Big Steve or High Noon ?

Hi Phil,
Let me get my car back from the factory after engine upgrade to ensure all is ok and I'll then let you know. My email address is robp@internationalforwarding.co.uk so we can discuss privately later on. cheers.

Well now, thanks so much everybody. It seems that a lot of folks have information which if collated should produce an interesting document. S&S have had some input too and I have a set of pipes on the way so later this summer I should be able to get some research done. Hooking up a tablet to the ECU sounds worthwhile, is there an article up there somewhere which would teach an old mechanical dinosaur like me how to do that? Thanks again, phil

Download Pro Tune II and the instructions, it's all there. I know what you mean about the mechanical dinosaur, I am happier adjusting screws on carbs than stroking keys on a laptop. The laptop can make a big improvement to your engines performance, in the right hands.
