Download Pro Tune II and the instructions, it's all there. I know what you mean about the mechanical dinosaur, I am happier adjusting screws on carbs than stroking keys on a laptop. The laptop can make a big improvement to your engines performance, in the right hands.
Just my luck - all of our computers are Apple Macs and I need windows. Still and all, I have downloaded the handbook and will study up asap. I thought I was supposed to be retired!!!??? Anyway - thanks for the tip.

I run a small tablet permanently connected to the ECU and it monitors amongst other things engine temp. The engine is at its very hottest when driving through traffic around 10-20 mph. Motorway its usually around 200F.
Slow moving traffic and it will get to 250F - hottest I have ever seen it in 30,000 miles.
A good fully synthetic oil should be good for 280F, so I don't think there should be a problem. Its air cooled and designed to tolerate running hot.
I think the ECU records engine temp, along with max revs etc, so you should be able to see the highest recorded temp and compare it with your oil spec.
Good luck and happy motoring If the ECU meters and records temperatures where is the sensor / sender unit? Where does it measure the temperature and can the sender be fitted up to a gauge? If these are stupid questions it is probably because I don't recognise up to date equipment - sorry.

In the M3W Parts Book version 5.2 on page 67/74 there is an electrical diagram.
This shows which sensors are detected and sent to the ECU.
The data can then be displayed and recorded using the Protune software.
On my Oiltank I have installed my own sensor near the oil outlet, this controls the oil pump to cooler on and off.

Phil my pipes have always glowed red which I only notice when opening the garage on return in the dark. I drilled out the front baffles on the standard exhaust 38mm hole & now it breathes better & the pipes do not glow quite as much.
I never got the urban cooling kit & have never experienced skip fire. I wonder if the louder exhaust will cause a problem with the new MOT test. I think its subjective just the testers opinion.

Good luck and happy motoring How did you permanently connect to the ECU? Mine has a Mini USB connector under a plate that is screwed on with very small screws and lord help you if you drop one of those little buggers.

Last génération have obd connector but you find mini usb connector under Plate screwed with little alen screws.

I know it’s under there but how would you permanently connect to it? And still have an ecu that could not get crud into it?

The temperature that the ECU gets is Cylinder Head Temperature, not oil temperature. There is a relationship but they are not the same. I don't think you could make the mini USB on the ECU fully weatherproof for a permanent fit.

Does anyone have any new thoughts to add on this discussion, please?
My 3w has been pinking more and more over the last few weeks. My local dealer has twice cleared the faults log and checked everything over. Not only was the pinking a worry but I felt that thd engine was not achieving full power; it felt like it was being strangled .
On a long run today a cylinder head gasket has blown.
I've not seen the pipes glowing red but my engjne is definitely not well. Any advice would be much appreciated. All parts are standard as far as I know.
