One issue in favour of Garmin is the ability to use their free software on your pc to work out a scenic route ( in as opposed the usual shortlist / faster) and the aquire it to the sat may unit. Helpful if out for a scenic run rather than going to a destibation

The inbuilt satnav in both of our Mercs is of the interactive Garmin variety, but I have to say in general I prefer waze - it seems much quicker at spotting traffic jams and offering alternatives, so I often use that instead.

I would not rely on a phone alone (I used the iPhone with Tom-Tom for a long time), but 2 years ago I decided on a stand alone. Now I have a Garmin (with is compatible with my wife's Mini's business solution-the reason we choose for Garmin), but I prefer the more intuitive Tom-Tom we had in the past. I use my Phone for back-up, at least for the Garmin we have lifetime updates.

In my Mog I use an iPhone with the app "Scenic" by www.motomappers.com. The app allows you to download maps. This makes you independent of an Internet connection. With the app you can create routes and also document driven routes. You can also create routes from gpx files that you previously created in another program. I'm very happy with that. In my everyday car I use a Tom Tom Go 5000 with traffic information in real time (I don't really need it in the Mog) and lifelong updates. An important criterion for the smartphone in the Mog is that I don't need an extra device to store when I park my car.

Google maps still works without a signal, provided you acquired the route while you had one! Just no route/traffic updates. There are standalone free satnav apps too which only need gps signal (but again no traffic). Finally get a downloadable flat map app like Galileo, and download before you go to a new country. For U.K. there is also GBmaps which has the 1:200000 road atlas.

I use a TomTom GO520 on tours, I bought it last summer for our USA vacation, it cost 200€ and was cheaper than a navigation system in a rental car for the holiday season. It has the advantage that all maps of the whole world are included and that it makes free updates of the maps. It has its own Wifi and makes updates independently of the PC. With the MyDrive app you can plan the whole vacation on the PC with comfort and then you send it to the TomTom easily.
It has one big advantage: It guides the route you want to take, as you have entered it. Smartphone applications like GoogleMaps dynamically change the route as you drive. You want to drive through the nature park, but because another way is shorter or faster, you suddenly drive past garbage cans, slums and scrap yards with Google Maps.
Michael's recommendation sounds good when you use a smartphone, Motomappers.
BTW, „Here“ is an invention of Nokia, later on, German Car builder have bought this system. Beware, „Here“ also changes routes during driving.

I have a Garmin bought a couple of years ago to replace the knackered Tomtom. It works well. I did have a Tomtom app on my old android phone and that was handy but signal reliant. I also like the preprogrammable routes on Garmin too....allowing nice routes. Mind you I tend to set a route off a map and only use Satnav when closer to the destination or forced into a detour. I often set the Satnav for chosen waypoints too....a bit of paper map perusing first to get a base route. The only way ai would use just iPhone now is to get a monthly plan with good data included.

Thanks to everybody who responded. Now in Denmark at the Aarhus Classic,so have travelled 1200 miles from France in the Mog, a good test for the iPhone using Apple maps as opposed to Google maps which is more user friendly. It works perfectly if the route is downloaded prior to departure and you stick to it. Diversions or the need to explore meaning a diversion from the downloaded route is problematic unless you are using mobile data when it will reroute you. Then it was fantastic. So for 99% of the journey were able to use free route planning. Bought A 1.5 m charging cable and 7.99 for a holder. I will try to post Aarhus pics separately.
