A video here showing Melmerby village green yesterday. Every year the village plays reluctant host to travellers headed for the Appleby Horse Fair, who ignore all attempts to deter them from using the village green as a campsite. Also some footage of the A686 showing more unwanted guests on the way.

Interesting. It has provoked some "discussion" on the Leica User Forum...

Yeah, I know, wanted to move a car today but my mate Pikey Chris was headed up there, he goes up every year meets up with his extended family.

I don't have a problem with travelling folk. Couple of the scrap collectors used to drop round if they'd picked something intetesting up on their rounds, receipt always given and never any come back.

Perhaps you could persuade them to return their collections from me over the years, A horse trailer, tack, 2 chainsaws, generator.

All was locked away.

Trailer recovered from the site minus its contents. Poor misunderstood people !!!!

The Police told me that if I offered a reward to the Gypsy Liaison Officer, that my mower would be 'found' and returned. I remarked that the Police where therefore acting as money launderers if that was the case.

Since having a caravan and nicking things makes you part of a minority 'race', they appear free to do what they want, causing chaos and upset wherever they go.

It is strange, but despite the nearby large empty spaces the travellers going to the Sumer Solstice at Stonehenge never seem to try to camp on Salisbury Plain.

Could it be the MOD Security people are somewhat less sensitive and understanding of the needs of these special people?

A friend of mine went to the Appleby horse fair. He said you could purchase two fifty pound notes there for twenty quid!

We happened across it around 40 years ago on our way to holiday in the Lake District, we thought the sight and sound of the spectacle was quite amazing.

We all need somewhere to live in peace really - I don't know enough about the community to comment other than it was quite an occasion to witness and we weren't offered any clothes pegs or bunches of lavender.

There is a new development over in Churston that has recently been completed 6 months ago they are 500k each (large grey boxes) and about 6 of them, none of them have sold as yet. They have been built on a site adjacent to an area of common land upon which the travelling community turn up occasionally and leave in a bit of a state, the Council have bordered the area with large boulders but it didn't prevent them gaining access last year. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-64038088.html

Since the houses have been completed it has become a builders fence "gated" estate and they park an empty police vehicle near the entrance to the houses, I am assuming as a deterrent to any would be travellers/squatters not likely to speed up the selling process.

They are not very impressive, all the same little boxes.

Yes, they are very ordinary large boxes with very little privacy or garden - plenty of concrete so just the thing for a caravan hide..

For that money you can find something individual over on this side of the river with a nice aspect and large secluded garden, the closer you get to Dartmoor the cheaper they get.
