Sleeping with dogs by Brian Sewell is a book about the 17 dogs Sewell owned over a long lifetime (usually rescued dogs). It's a well observed account of the relationship between a man and his dog, delivered with the usual sharp wit that Sewell fans loved about the man.

Hillbilly elegy by JD Vance is a fascinating account of Vance's upbringing in a poor family in Ohio, and how he rose above it. He dispassionately describes the white underclass, or white trash whose feelings of abandonment fuelled the outsider politics of Donald Trump.

Finally, Michael Connolly's Harry Bosch novels. My wife downloaded the first one of these, I've now read the first eight of them. I'd say Rebus fans should enjoy them.

Love the Bosch novels - Connelly has been releasing one every year or so since the 90’s - only got a few left to read.

As a massive fan of George Macdonald Fraser and his Flashman books I was pleased to discover the Adventures of Thomas Flashman series from Robert Brightwell. Same concept as Fraser's but set in the Napoleonic era. Maybe the writing isn't quite up to the standard of the original, but still a good ripping yarn.

George Macdonald Fraser is one of my favorite writers too; not just his fiction mind you. Steel Bonnets over the border (about the border reivers) is excellent, Quartered safe out here (about his experiences in Burma) is one of the finest squaddy’s eye views of a military campaign I’ve ever read. His three books of comic short stories about Dand McNeill, based loosely on his time as a young officer in a highland regiment (the general danced at dawn, McAuslan in the rough, the sheikh and the dustbin) are absolute classics, which I’ve re-read many times.

Above the Battle by Ronald Lyell Munro; a personal account of flying the Auster in wartime. There are just a couple of memoirs which tell with wit and skill the story of the pilots and planes of the AOP squadrons and this is one.

The Bush by Don Watson. The best telling yet of my generations' relationship to the great Australian bush and its legends.

Yes re reading 'Moggie' by a certain spanner juggler whose opinions I rate. Apart from making me terrified about what is about to drop off next it does give me confidence that with a cuppa at hand and some application I should be able to achieve most tasks.
Of course I have the latest publication by my bed for constant checking too , lovely yellow car on the cover.

At this very moment(well, not right now, I'm writing) I'm reading "The Big Nowhere" by James Ellroy, the same guy of "L.A. Confidential"...

Mark Nicholas. My love affair with Cricket (A beautiful game).

Just started reading it. I have high hopes. Mark was the captain of Hampshire in the 80's, back when I i used to watch them a lot. I'm looking forward to a cricket nostalgia-fest.
