Talking of fuse boards and garages reminds me of the time the local electricity board changed the meter in the garage.
Woke up one Saturday morning to find no power, neighbours houses and street light still had power.
Went to check the fuses, smelt burning as I opened the garage and saw that the electricity meter had basically exploded, blasted clean off the wall, all the supply wiring in the vicinity was burned back to copper.
Underneath was my Plus 4 with a full tank of petrol. Fortunately undamaged apart from a few holes where molten brass or copper had burned through the hood.
Electricity board attended and made it all safe and then turned up with a new meter. They were very keen to take the old one away.
Put in a claim for a new hood and got the various quotes, attitude changed and tried everything to get out of paying out saying it was caused by lightening strike. Got paid out in the end after getting records from local Met Office that no lightning conditions in area.
In an off the record conversation with litigation manager, he more or less confirmed that the fault was the technician not tightening up the meter tails properly which had caused the live feed to arc across.
To this day, I've kept fuel, paints, solvents, welding gases well away from a 10 meter radius of the supply board!
