While suffering from insomnia I decided to cure it by reading the small print on my Heritage Insurance Policy. Underwritten by KGM

Subject:
Key Facts summary Windscreens/Glass limited to £500 minus £90 excess if approved supplier ( Not named ) used £,150 otherwise. There is an overall limit of £500 in any one period of cover.

Ouch:
With a Morgan screen hovering around £1000 as far as I can see, that means you will be looking at me taking a £650 hit for a broken screen. Policy change time coming up.

Surely it must be possible to dismantle the frame and take it to a glazier to have him put the requisite glass in for under £100? The only problem I foresee is that they won't be able to obtain glass with the heated elements but if it will save £500 or more, it is well worth considering.

As a matter of interest, Caterham sell their own similar but slightly smaller, heated screen assembly incl. alloy frame for under £500.

I wonder how many bits of profit are built into the Morgan price? But there again it is what has kept them going for over 100 years and given them a healthy trading profit last year.

That limit of £500 is unrealistic, but replacement windscreen cover is a neat scam firmly locked in between 2 of the well known providers and the insurers.

On the Mercedes CLC the panel between the glass windscreen and the glass roof is considered bodywork, and not covered by the windscreen cover. On many policies the glass roof is also not covered.

If the car has a heated screen de-mister I suspect that to replace it with an unheated screen would result in an MOT fail, if they actually checked.
Perhaps a simple load on the circuit so the warning light comes on correctly would work....!

If you insure next time with Gott and Wynn they cover the work carried out by a Morgan dealer, using factory parts.

Yes, not had to make a claim with Gott and Wynn but have just renewed with them again for a second year as their policy with regard to Morgans seems very good

Good advice but specifically regarding the MOT test- screen demisters and the checking there-of isn't part of the test.

I cracked the glass panel on my last Mercedes ML350 between roof and windscreen a couple of years ago. Car was under warranty and I got it replaced for free.
I have had the morgan windscreen (not heated) replaced a couple of times by dealers. Autoglass the preferred replacer wouldn't touch it after I asked them if they carried the necessary beading.

I’m with Gott n Wynne too! Recently my heated screen failed, total PITA when raining but frankly I don’t think it worked from new as rarely used and only discovered when out of warranty.
Screen replaced at the Factory, £1200 less £120 excess IIRC.

I thought it had been brought in with the new changes, put possibly it only applies to new cars registered this year. I'll check....!
