Under my car today I found a small leak in the port side centre section silencer box (iron/steel job - not stainless). Kwik Fit can't find a suitable box does anyone have a part number for it. 19992 +8 single exhaust with cats.

Also noticed that the front sections of the exhaust are loned with what looks like asbestos covered on coiled wire - presumably this is to try to kepe the heat down in the engine bay, does anyone else have this?

Best bet would be to ring Mark Baldwin (or the Parts Dept) at the factory and ask him.

The manifold is often wrapped with heat blanket to reduce the heat soak into the engine bay. This sort of thing. Works well enough, but is a pain to remove (and the mice in the garage took a liking to mine).

Ponapay, I need the same part. A hole the size of about a 50 pence coin. Any joy on sourcing a replacement?

Only source seems to be Melvyn Rutter. Have now ordered a new box and tail pipe. The hole/s are (were - temporarily filled with exhaust putty from Halfords) underneath the exit pipe at the rim of the box.

Does anyone have experience of the difference between the tail pipe with resonator and the straight through pipe? Currently the noise is a mellowed burble - very pleasant and discreet. I assume a staright through will be noisier but will it 'burble' more?

A straight through tends to promote a "barking" type sound with individual pulses sounding more like a "bang" if you're after a "burble" then converting to only a "straight through" will give you ear ache and not a very trad-v8 sound.

As +8's have individual pipes from each bank with no balance pipe the "burble" will always be harder to get. If your after the real american style/TVR burble then you're better of going for a balanced rear section. Although I've no idea who does such a thing for a Mog +8.

Best of luck.

Pity I didn't read this earlier. Last year, I swapped out a single system for a friend of mine with a 1994 Plus 8 (when he opted for a headers, twin exhaust and a good chip). Still have all the old parts in the garage downstairs waiting for me to dump them. They are perfect still..Florida car.

You can get a suitable silencer almost anywhere. Should cost you about 40 GBP in mild steel. Not much of a market in the Morgan trade for non-stainless.

Sure. Exhaust sound is a function of the manifolds, the pipe bore, the pipe length, the silencer, the engine dynamics, the resonators, the diameter of the end piece and whether you have a twin or single system.

Your question is about sound not power. There are few automobile sounds in the world as lovely as a V8 makes. It actually saved the MMC in 1968.

You can shape it to your liking. Why not experiment? In your case, I would toss the tail resonator. Mild steel resonators rust anyway as they are too far from the heat to do anything else and they raise the pitch rather than lower it. You want STAINLESS exhaust tips with a wider bore than your pipe. That will lower the tone and enhance your burble. (smile) BTW, your burble is called overrun..

The Americans are the best at this tail tip stuff. Search their aftermarket sites using "stainless exhaust tip" as your search terms. You need a straight cut rolled edge 7" (or so) 2.25" inlet and a 2.75 to 3.25" outlet.

If can't find what you need, I will mail you one.

Lorne

I have ordered the same from Melvyn too.

It is being sent next week to a mechanic on The Hardgate.
Dave Angus - Angus Service Station - 01224 585424.

Anyway, I don't know how much it costs to be sent but you could get the part sent to my mechanic (with the other stuff I ordered) to lower shipping costs.

Plus he would have experience of fitting mine prior to yours.

Just an idea....

Ooh oohh. Have just been advised that Melvyn Rutter can't get the exhaust!

Ponapay - did you get any joy ordering yours? (Port side silencer)

Hi Paul,
I'm sure theres a exhaust specialist local to you who could custom made one for you.

One that I've used before was www.zorstec.net

Cheers
