How frustrating for you - I'm glad you are sorted now though and can enjoy the holiday. It looks as if maybe they stretched the metal a wee bit too thin when fitting it.
It would appear to be a manufacturing defect but we have quite a few ex and present factory moles on here that will doubtless attempt to justify it on the basis that it is hand built.
It would have been a good PR opportunity for MMC to put this right for you IMHO.

There is no explanation other than, in my opinion, the seam was ground down a little too far at the time of manufacture which has led to the split. having seen the manufacturing process and looking at the sharp angle of the bodywork, I am sure that you are right. You will inevitably get variation in a manual process such as used at MMC and that combined with the body flex inherent in the design is likely to have been the cause. Trouble is that MMC cant really say that for obvious reasons. But MMC arent alone. I once had a BMW badly damed to the roof paint by bird poo. BMW responded that I should wash it off every day - hardly a practical response when I left the car at the marina car park to take my boat to Spain. Reality was a very poor implementation of the initial water based paints, but they wouldnt bend. And that car was 2 years old. Sad but cars, any car, are a source of trouble and expense.

The lack of response from Morgan doesn't surprise me. They will have taken note and may have a library of other examples, but as the car is well out of warranty they will say nothing. Even with warranty issues they often don't say much, beyond "we have fixed the problem". I find this frustrating, but understand why: sadly our litigious society means no manufacture will say anything that might, in any way, be used against them at some point in the future. All coach-built bodies are prone to cracks along panel lines, one only has to look at examples in museum where the inflexibility of aluminium and cellulose paint are in conflict with the wood frame beneath. That this sort of fault is rare is a testament to Morgan's craftsmanship. But it is also a cosmetic failure as the structure beneath isn't damaged. I take the view that this sort of issue can happen and as a Morgan owner I have to take it on the chin. It is part of the Morgan Ownership Experience...!!

Wait a minute......., I’m sure the OP tells us that Morgan has paid for the repairs, all he’s not pleased about is that they haven’t explained the cause. If this is the case, I think the OP is being less than fair towards Morgan, I would expect to pay for the repairs myself on an eight year old car. Since he’s not going to buy another Morgan, I wish him good luck with all the other brands, Id recommend KIA next time, seven year warranty might just be enough.

He didn’t actually say that Morgan paid for the repair. He implied that their response was so defensive, as if he wanted them to pay whereas all he really wanted was an explanation. And he didn’t even get that.! My experience also of the factory. They’ve got your money and thereafter, they usually don’t wanna know!

Had they have paid for the repairs and taken responsibility why would the OP bother posting this. He would have been a happy bunny and been singing the companies praises I would have thought.

Thanks for all the replies and to set the record straight. MMC have neither given an explanation nor paid for or towards the repair.

Just to balence opinion: I recently found on my 2012 plus 8 a cracked gearbox mounting. I reported it to MMC and although i would say the initial response was slow, they provided me with a replacement part and offered to fit it.
