I have done the upgrade to 128CI and there really isn't that much more power for all the money it costs. The real issue is that the drivetrain is already over powered by the stock motor's torque so adding more power will only have you replacing your clutch more often. I'm on my third clutch now and have learned to be much more respectful of all that torque going through that small clutch plate that I'm not doing anymore tire burning outs!
but I do love the sound of the straight pipes without any baffling!
Cheers
JV

Thanks JVS. I am happy with the cam so I guess I will stop while I am ahead. Is the clutch the same clutch the miatas use? So time to go look at ohlins or chassis upgrades then.

Im actually a bit shocked that the clutch cant handle the extra power as the miata transmissions have always been overbuilt and is already running more power than the M3W. The transmission was original designed for a truck and I have heard rumors of them lasting quite a long time with power ugrades

Possibly upgrading the clutch to something sold by flyingmiata or otherwise may be the fix? They sell a stage 1 clutch that is rated conservatively at 260 lb-ft at the crank. I know other manufacturers sell far more capable clutches than even this when people supercharger and turbocharge their miatas.

As far as I am aware the clutch is either bespoke to the M3W or nobody outside MMC knows which parts bin the components came from. I'm reasonably sure that it's got nothing to do with the MX5/Miata.

As far as I remember the M3W clutch comes from a Volvo station wagon. It was explained in a thread some time ago.

Shame if they did not use or we cannot use a miata clutch set up. I agree Miatas are pretty bullet proof with significant horsepower

I've done some research and it appears that the short M3W flywheel mounting shaft has the same bolt pattern as the Miata uses, at least in that year range up to around '15.

There are race clutches out there for the Miata with light weight aluminium flywheels with stage 1 or 2 pressure plate and disc.

First one I found: $196.95 US Free Shipping
eBay US Miata Flywheel-Clutch Assy 1

Second one: $215 US Free Shipping
eBay US Miata Flywheel-Clutch Assy 2

This might be worth looking into.

I know that there are some kick butt Miata's running lots more hp than the M3W without any major clutch issues.

Good luck.

I remember reading on here it was of Volvo origin and if I recall correctly they replaced like for like.

I have a feeling it was one of the stateside boys that posted.

It is the clutch release bearing and slave that is from a Volvo, the clutch plate itself has not been identified.
