I'm searching to solve a few problems on a aero S1 2002 version (numer 142).
When we were driving the car, the power comes nearly to zero, and we let the car goes on the side of the road. The engine accelerate and decelerate without we press or depress the throttle pedal. We stop the engine, then we restart, and the engine doesn't rev at iddle, it stops when hot. Now, we can drive the car, but it seems to have lost some power. When the engine is cold, it revs at iddle, but when hot, it's always stop when the foot is not on the accelerator. And we ear like a suction noise for a second (like some air leak) when we put the feet on the throttle. Any idea where to look after ?

Sounds a little bit like a problem I had on my S1 Aero a couple of years ago which, I resolved by replacing the TDC sensor. It's a BMW part, p/n 12141742629.

yes sounds about right philipoo, very comon failure on BMW engine.

Do you know where is the TDC sensor located on the engine ? It's just to see how it's look and ask to BMW if they can check it

From memory it's near the middle of the engine at the back, accessible from the top with bonnet and plastic engine cover removed. If I'm not mistaken this sensor provides engine speed to the ECU whilst I think that engine position is given by the dual camshaft sensors.

Best thing is get the car onto a diagnostic computer using the OBD plug, on my LHD car just under dash on far left side. Bizarrely neither of the two BMW garages I tried could "speak" to the ECU on my car and it was a friend with his own garage and a multimake diagnostic computer who was able to get the info. The computer asks for the BMW model and we had to try a few V8 types before success. In the end we selected: 7 series, 1996-2001, Motronic 7.2

I had exactly the same problem on my S1 2003 Aero8 (no iddle when warm, suction noise, power loss). It appears after a (too?)high RPM on the engine. After a chek with the computer at a BMW garage, they told me to replace the debimeter?(débimètre in french, air flow control system). It works well now.

you can see if it's the MAF (mass air flowmeter) by disconnecting it. if the car run better you have the guilty party (well that's how it works on the 6cyl BMW engine anyway). The ECU will then only work on alpha n map (throttle opening and revs) so fuel economy wont be great but at least it will help the trouble shooting.

My S1 mass air flow meter failed, it can be disconnected under the front cowl on the off side. The car should run okay until you can get it fixed. An RAC diagnostic test, set for the 7 series V8 picked up the fault.

I talked to Keith at Brands Hatch Morgans and he explained to me to look at the AFM too. We will check it with the computer tomorrow and we will be fixed.
