I can tell you based on the route map that he is either taking A1A or US1 south through Florida and each of those has greater than 2 lane road sections. He isnt taking the major highways, but he certainly isnt going the true side roads. You need to get away from the coast to get anything like that anymore other than sections of A1A. Assuming he is taking US17 down from Savannah also greater than 2 lanes in sections. 202 from Yulee to Amelia island is greater than 2 lane. I could go on, but you get the point. Had he really wanted to avoid greater than 2 lanes he could have, but the trip would take an eternity as most of those roads are max 35 (through towns) and max 45MPH or 55MPH in sections outside of towns. Great progress so far - what a brave chap on those roads. Interesting route he's taking. His students worked on developing it with a route that would meet the following criteria: - Visit all 48 contiguous states - Avoid big cities - Two lane highways only - No chain hotels or food, only Mom and Pop places - See historic places - See unique places - See national parks - See landmarks Wise man I hadn't appreciated that, thanks. Thanks for the insight I was a little puzzled but don't know your road networks.

Agreed. My impression is that these were "initial condition" guidelines, not absolute rules... adjusted as necessary for time and convenience as he has to get the trip completed before classes start this fall.

That explains the difference between theory and in practise perfectly - he has to get back to work as well..

I apologize that I have not read his blog, but is there a map/itinerary of sorts that he's following that's available for anyone to look at?
I grew up in Michigan and lived pretty much from the south to the north of it, including the UP. But I will be retiring in 526 days, 6 hours and 37 minutes, but I'm not really counting, and the wife and I could really get into a trip like this.
Thanks and great day all...

That would be a hard route to do with the wife, or at least in that short of time. Maybe the upper half of the US one year and the southern the next. Living in the Great St. Louis MO area, going north one year and south the next might be a feasible goal. Thanks again. Also, it looks Will is running motorcycle tires instead of the Blockley or similar tires.

Completely and utterly barking mad...FANTASTIC!
I am just so full of admiration for Will.
What a modern day adventurer he is.
God speed Will.
