And the houses and Chateau's are ridiculously cheap compared to blighty , don't know why we haven't all emigrated , quality of life heaps better and classiclemans would be only down the road instead of driving through traffic clogged Uk !

When we moved here in 2004 we really had no idea, no planning other than we once went to a market here and vaguely thought how nice it would be to shop there regularly. We were very lucky, taken to heart by neighbours, our little boy was able to walk to school, the farm house turned out to be fly free, the weather so much more conducive to eating out of doors. Of course there are big differences and we do live in the countryside which means a doctors appointment can be had the same day and the local hospital (which we visited a lot when our son was growing up and breaking bits of himself) is brilliant. Yes the roads are good; we have crazy drivers too; houses are cheaper but difficult to resell; business can be lackadaisical, utility bills expensive and yet there are more Morgans in my neck of the woods than ever to be seen in England - okay, four - so it all seems to be working out so far and yet ... would we return to England ? Sometimes when we are there we think, it is still beautiful. People are still very friendly; our son loves it :but there are so many reasons to think that people can make life interesting wherever one lives. Enjoy what one has and be thankful.

We first started going to France on motorbikes in 1983. The first thing that struck us was how we were welcomed and treated being on motorbikes, at a time when pubs in the UK were happy to sport “No Bikers” signs and motorcyclists were seen as rather second-class. This was a revelation and pointed to a completely different way of life. France has changed enormously but that culture of celebrating people enjoying themselves however they want to seems to remain.

However, the speed humps are a problem!

I went out with a French girl once, well, she was half French -- she just shaved one armpit.

Less taxes collected and more roads to cover?

Two unshaved armpits and she would have been Greek.

After 37 years living here, I think that just about sums it up for me but no doubt others will say the same of their chosen abodes.
Still can't get a decent beer mind - never been keen on that Continental fizzy stuff - and I would love to be able to go to Shelsley Walsh and Prescott from time to time...

The mentality in the UK is to minimise paying tax in all its forms, but to expect a Rolls Royce service from anything between the NHS, road repairs, cutting verges and litter tidying.

We get what we pay for, and here voters vote for low taxes.

Avoiding tax is a huge problem which rarely makes the public domain..........

I was only yesterday looking at photo's of our cars together here. Hope you are both well.

A Taffmogger from Surrey told me that the high non local traffic was wrecking the roads(commuters from outside the county) and not high enough local population to collect local taxes.
