[ T Have read about other pump failures. Wish there was a more robust substitute! . There is. A Walbro GSS342. There is an article in this months MTWC Bulletin magazine about fuel pump failures. https://www.mtwc.co.uk/ If you cannot access the article I can send you a copy.

Has the throttle cable snapped? I did wonder about that as well. The fuel pump sound is so different that I am really thinking that is it, but thank you, I will check that as well.

it is damn hard to find gasoline without it here in my area. The stations are few and far between. https://www.pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov=ILThis may help. There are far more out there than you might believe. Everything that uses small engines pretty much require it. Thanks, Michael. Yes, I saw this link when you first discussed this issue in the past. Unfortunately I am far away from any of these for any regular fill-ups. But will keep my eyes peeled.

Are the pumps buggering up because they are inferior, or are they buggering up because they are leaving bits of methyl in the tanks during the welding process?

Three Things: 1 When its quiet and you turn on the key can you hear the fuel pump? 2 Did you check if there is 50plus psi at the injectors? 3 The clunk--how tight is the drive belt. If too loose it will skip and you will hear a "clunk"

Are the pumps buggering up because they are inferior, or are they buggering up because they are leaving bits of methyl in the tanks during the welding process? Interesting question - and perhaps this needs a new thread. When I was visiting with Will Freeman during his trip through NJ, he shared an interesting observation about his fuel pump failure(s) in California. Will said that whoever worked on his M3W (name escapes me) concluded after the 2nd failure that there was a high probability that the root cause of the pump failures was heat. Specifically, that the pump re-circulated the fuel back to the pump, but that the fuel was heated significantly due to the routing of the non-insulated fuel lines near the cylinders. The "hot" fuel then caused premature failure of the pump. It's an interesting observation, admittedly third-hand, but worth investigating. A laser thermometer could easily check the fuel temperature after a long run - would be interesting to see if it does in fact heat-up significantly! Given the high-volume of the Rover fuel pump, relative to the demands of the S&S, could also result in much more fuel re-circulation than expected. Anyone heard of this theory before?

It was Bill Fink, the Morgan Guru of Guru's, who worked on Will Freeman's 3 Wheeler. This was his sound opinion but as with all theories needs to be tested. Considering Will has traveled considerable distance since without incident it could well be correct. For the sake of a few dollars it is a simple fix.
