I think this is one of those questions that poses so many different answers. Simon hits the nail on the head , it depends upon your attitude to risk.

Undoubtedly the most comprehensive cover is provided by a separate Continental Touring Policy from RAC/AA , they really leave nothing to chance , and as Stephen has commented the RAC will waive the 10 year cut-off date for us. If I am doing a long trip deep into Europe , then that would be my choice.

There are several companies who offer "bolt-on" modules as part of your UK insurance (Gott & Wynne, Headley etc) and these are generally serviced by an organisation like Green Flag or similar.

Then there are "freebie" policies that come with bank accounts etc. If was just going somewhere in N France like LMC or Monthlery, then I would be happy to use those, but I wouldn't be expecting them to provide a similar level of service to the 5 Star policies of the RAC/AA.

Breaking down in a Morgan is pretty stressful experience at the best of times, so anything that can remove that worry and give you peace of mind, is well worth it in my book.

Also question how long you have to wait before car is repatriated to the UK. From personal experience times vary quite considerably. Green Flag took 2 weeks to recover my friends Ferrari from Classic Le Mans in 2016. RAC last recovered mine in 48 hours from southern France albeit a few years ago.

Insure your car with Classicline and full European breakdown and Recovery is included in the policy as standard. I've found them to be very competitive too.

The RAC is overpriced and long-term customers are ripped-off in my experience.

£110 for short term cover would go a long way towards a decent, all- inclusive insurance policy.

Just to clarify. I was with the RAC for decades. My membership accidently lapsed due to a change in bank details.

They "pursued" me to rejoin and offered a price at less than 50% of which I'd been paying for years. When I dug a bit deeper I found I'd been paying massively over the odds compared to more recent members.

A friend had an identical experience and went elsewhere.

Similar tales abound on the Internet. I would advise any long term RAC members to look at what they're paying.

I use the Nationwide Flex Plus Acc which includes euro breakdown and holiday insurance plus some other benefits. Hope I never have to find out what its like.

Anybody had cause to use it?

Absolutely. For peace of mind I'd do the same.

For a longer term solution other options are available.

I've only had cause to use breakdown recovery twice in over forty years.

The first time was with the RAC. No problem but the recovery vehicle was a sub-contractor not an RAC vehicle.

The second time was Morgan recovery for my day-old Roadster. Again a local sub-contractor - they managed to damage my paintwork.

How good do you think the max cover is?

The summary of the cover provided by the comprehensive plus option states “there are no limits to the costs of getting your vehicle home”

So there are limits to the cover. If necessary, your car won’t be repatriated at no cost to you.

One of our team returning from LMC this year had cause to get recovered , I thought he called it MOG rescue anyway they organised a transporter offered to fly him home , but he chose to use the rental provided to Calais then another from Dover to Leeds I was impressed by the service . Though for what I pay in insurance through Headley I would have expected no less a service
(Six times what the previous owner was paying) in spite of a long and perfect no claims record. The insurance for non resident owners is just a rip off. No wonder most kiwi owners just pick an address and don't admit to living out of the U.K.
