In our 1972 4/4, the passenger side of the transmission tunnel gets very hot on a trip of more than a few miles. It has done all the time we’ve had the car (3 years). We are planning a trip down to Riom, with legs of up to 6 hours if we avoid motorways. I wondered whether I could install some insulation over the tunnel, but under the thinly padded cover or is cooking my passenger’s calf an essential part of heat dissipation?
Any ideas on what would be the best insulation to use, please?

Mark, Peter J insulated his old Roadster tunnel. It is doable & the thread is on here somewhere.

Mark,
You want to try a "C" type in the summer. The soles of your shoes will come unstuck.

Investigate suitable insulation; Google, E Bay etc simply install under existing material. No problems. You might want to think about thickness vs. effectiveness depending on how tight your trsnsmission cover is currently.

That’s what I did and was pretty easy to do, can’t remember where I got it from as it was about 9 years ago.

This is the thread...... http://www.talkmorgan.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/305029/Searchpage/1/Main/16418/Words/Dynamat/Search/true/Re:_The_Road_to_Audio_Nirvana#top My main aim was to cut road noise, a secondary benefit was that heat soak from the engine was significantly reduced.

A closed cell campermat glued to the transmission tunnel is both inexpensive and effective. It works in my 1972 +8, the chrome gear lever knob is less fun.

Thanks everybody - really useful advice (especially about wearing sewn on soles if I ever get a C type!).

Like Reg in his C type, my Healey footwells are unbearable in the summer. Assuming the heat is not coming from exhaust through the floor (my car has sheets of asbestos from factory under it) There seems to be 3 solutions..
1) apply dynamat to the bulkhead and tunnel, cheaper stuff works but not so well
2) make sure all cable grommets and anything else that passes through the bulkhead are in place. Shine a light from engine side and check. You'd be surprised how much heat can come through a small hole!
3) Wear fireproof socks! SBM can provide the supplier (a joke he will appreciate)

Steve, I find that the Memsahib benefits from a nice bowl of cold water which can leak out through the floor. The ice machine has to work overtime though!!
