Two emails today, different sources, similar technology but different markets.

From Moss; offering a classic car tracker & immobiliser, detects movement then sends text, email whatever to say where the car is plus you can ‘talk’ to the unit to tigger a relay to break the ignition or fuel circuit.
£299 to buy including first years subscription, £99 a year thereafter.

From Vodafone, alarm SOS button for active 90 year old Mothers would could have a fall or an emergency. Detects location whether in or out of house, detects falls, message to inform when & where activated.
£78 to buy, £4 a month thereafter.

Ambivalent about the product for the car but the call button for one’s aged parents seems a real step up from most of the other call systems and a bargain price.
Usual disclaimers, etc.
I’ve no doubt others do similar products but rather bemused by the difference in the pricing between cars and parents.

And more than a bit bemused by the difference between what Voda charge for the granny and what they charge for a car.

When I had the Fezza, a tracker was compulsory and the cost was something like £350 pa. Even more irritating, after I sold the car just one month after renewing the tracker they refused any refund unlike the insurance company who had demanded the built in tracker be active

Someone said to me once - “Tracker OK if you want the car back!”

He was thinking of a stolen car being thrashed and abused I guess?

Well it makes a change that the really valuable tool protecting the truly valuable thing is cheaper.

A few years back a friend had his two week old 911 Turbo stolen, tracker never tripped! Guess it went from garage directly into a metal covered trailer. Never seen again.

Mogs are very rarely stolen - joyriders couln`t get the handbrake off + professional thieves know that they are difficult to fence.
Or you could go with the Vodaphone & install Mother in the car!

The GPS tracking that is built in to the Jag functions most of the time, I would not like to have to use it for real. To beat it all you would have to do is get the car into a truck that was shielded from the telephone signals then get it to an underground garage.

Twenty years ago a friend of mine bought himself the full fat Colin Mcrae Scooby 555 and one stipulation for the insurers was that it had to be fitted with a Tracker. Only the actual Tracker Fitter was allowed to know it's whereabouts in the car.
The final test to ensure it was operative was to shut it in a shipping container and hit the alarm button and see how long the response takes. They located it in 10 minutes.
I have worked my whole life installing and commissioning Radio Stations as had my friend and I have yet to hear an explanation that satisfies my mind as to how this works.

Its ULF which is apparently better through containers.

The higher class of trackers have three or more transmitters that work at different frequencies to allow for these issues. I would be surprised if the installer did not mark it on the paperwork as it is needed for testing, compliance and repairs etc They tend to use their own in house guys for the posh cars/trackers for this reason.
