Stuart has a point: the part might be weak and unreliable but that does not mean, it breaks on everyone after 4000 miles.
My recommendation would be: include the water-temperature gauge in your instrument scan if you do not do this anyway.
I have been told, that the radiator’s connection to the water hose could be giving in with a quiet pop and the water then slushing out unnoticed.
So watching the gauge closely is a good measure.

Craig,
I just saw that your car is Wolf-tuned: did you remove the airfilter from behind the radiator to enhance the airflow and get a sport-airfilter?
That is part of my package now too and of course, adds to the cost.
But the logic behind it made sense to me.

Just pulled this from Ford workshop manual.
Thermostat
The 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT engine is equipped with an electronic thermostat. The electronic thermostat will manually open if the coolant temperature has reached 98°C and there is no current flowing to the thermostat electrical element. When the engine is under load the electrical thermostat will receive a current from the PCM. The electrical current will heat the element inside the thermostat to allow the engine coolant to flow through the radiator when the coolant temperature has reached 60°C.
Coolant degas shutoff valve
The coolant degas shutoff valve is designed to stop the degas process during cold start. Shortly after the engine is started, the coolant degas shutoff valve will close and reduce the coolant flowing through the engine which will improve cold start fuel economy and warm up time of the coolant. When the coolant temperature has reached 80°C the valve will open and allow hot coolant to circulate through the coolant expansion tank.
Assuming it applies to versions used by MMC, it goes some way to explaining unexpected coolant temps especially with non-standard installations.

My radiator lasted about seven years and 12000 miles. It hadn’t started leaking but I got Williams to change it for their alloy one. Lucky I did. The outlet pipe was collapsing.
Whoever thought of plastic in a radiator?

I pre-emptively changed a perfect plastic radiator at 15000 miles, for an aluminium one. Less than a year later the aluminium sprung a leak!
The replacement one has been fine, touch wood.
In recent years, I have had to replace a radiator in a 4 year old Mini, leak probably caused by a stone impact. And last year in an 8 year old Audi.

Whoever thought of plastic in a radiator? An accountant.  Brilliant! I forget who but someone posted this pic a while back. The mechanical strength of a GF nylon 66 rad starts to fall away over 100C. Given that the coolant can leave the head at 110C it’s not surprising the compression from the hose clip will collapse the pipe. I think if I had a plastic rad I might try adding a thin wall metal sleeve inside to support the clip.

This technique was also used on the early 1.8 and 2.0L Duratec engines. Fortunately it was dropped on the later builds used in our Morgans and replaced with a standard lower temp opening stat. Because the thermostats is located remotely at the bottom of the engine on the cooler coolant input the mechanical stat might not react quick enough to sudden temp increases from hard acceleration etc. So the ECU can detect the sudden head temp increases and activate a heating element in the stat housing to encourage it to open if necessary . I think they call it progress…….

Based on information on TM and feedback from fellow DonMog members, I had ours swapped as soon as the car was out of warranty. I did not want to risk a ruined holiday while in the Alps.
