I know some of you out there, like us, have Solar PV and one or two have battery storage incorporated. We are 100% electric and are open to anything that improves our running cost so would like to share any thoughts regarding this option.

I am in a similar position to yourself and have considered the same course of action. I discussed this issue with a local Solar PV installer and also my neighbour who is a farmer with with a 50 acre array.
The battery packs currently on offer all seem to be Lithium Ion. I am lead to believe that the next big step forward will be Solid State batteries and that step is not too far away. I am prepared to wait for the increased efficiency of the latter.
I believe that Morgan are also planning on putting Solid State into their 3 wheeler EV.

I think SS batteries will be some time before commercial volumes come on stream. I have seen a few bleeding edge batteries but they are very small capacity and generally used in very high value devices to optimise them. The supplier is quoting 2022/2023 for larger capacity production (Toshiba)
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Are these the glass batteries reported on last year that works on the same chemistry and physics as "we don't know how it works but it does" probably a while to get the bugs out on those.

We had PV solar on our old house we sold in May. Doh!
We plan it for the new one as Suffolk Coastal Council is doing a mass procurement exercise and even with crap FIT rates the payback is under 10 years.
I would also consider batteries.

I have 10 solar panels on the roof 2 solar thermal for hot water. Got the first tariff going and then saw rates fall so now I would lose money on energy if moving. I am also biding my time over batteries waiting for more progress like many views expressed above! I also have a venting system running on a second water circulating pump as I have old rads and this keeps the house much warmer in the winter. Finally have had the house approved on Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) which awards £300 per year. Have therefore reduced my energy costs by over 30% over the past 5 years. So more money to spend on the MOG!

I was surprised but it has a low payback. I figure power will only get more expensive. I will post what the final offer looks like.

The inverter copes with this arrangement and maximises generation throughout the day whilst limiting generation to 4kw. Peak generation 29kwh per day. Our hot water is produced by an ASHP with a 300Litre storage. Heating is via 15kw ASHP and BIG rads. The loft has about 300mm of insulation and all cavities are insulated. We also get RHI of £650 per year (for 5 years). Our total elec consumption is about 14500 kwh per year, costing £1800 and we collect Solar FIT of £2500, but have only 18 years left on the original 25year contract. (By then i will be 88 so what to do then will probably be on my son's agenda!) Overall, i am happy with the package, on the down side, the maintenance on the ASHP kit costs £300-£400 a year and, will it last 18 years? Probably, just. I also expect i will get through 1 or 2 Solar PV Inverters at £1500 a piece. When i am 88 i will update you!

What does the service company do for £3-400? mine just needs the heat exchanger cleaning, and the strainer cleaned periodically (because I had some old cast iron rads that were starting to rust internally)
