This is an old Chestnut, but a valid one. Yes it's been around for as long as I can remember as an alternative but I think most of us would agree it's a good one.

Well it may be 800 volts but it leaves my emotions totally static  . I use to play with 275,000 for a living and that kept you awake alright. 800 volts dc? I don't think I'd like to get in the way of that, you'd be stuck to it wouldn't you? Nick

What's the voltage in a VW up elec, or a Nissan Leaf etc., Anyone know?

I think there already is an issue for fire crews attending electrical vehicle crashes.
RE the duty would I get a rebate for fuel on my petrol mower?

We should separate 3rd party insurance from fully comprehensive. This is the case in most European countries where the car is insured 3rd party, irrespective of the driver. Payment is part of VED and collected by Direct Debit, to have a car you must have a bank account. Not perfect, but ANPR would ensure most cars carried 3rd party insurance. Putting all the tax on petrol is considered to be regressive, impacting the poor who need a car to get to work. PC rubbish. Road Pricing, through ANPR, is a better option, I feel. A basic VED to drive on minor roads, all A Roads and Motorways road priced by time and distance.

From what I read the battery packs tend to catch fire in a crash as the cooling stops. Pouring water on an electrical fire will have interesting consequences....

Nick My i3 has a pyro device that actually cuts the main cables in the event of an accident, sorry don't know the actual voltage, but I think it's around 360
