I had my first chance to see what my new (to me) Aero is really capable of at an activity day by Carlimits at North Weald airfield today. And I was very pleasantly surprised.

I have previously done this day in a 220 Elise, 350 Exige and Evora 400.

The format for the day starts with a high speed 90 deg bend which is taken progressively faster, there is lots of run off so no fear of hitting anything, I hit a respectable 68mph, I think the quickest was a GT3 at about 75mph.

Then two short sprint courses are laid out, from memory my times were pretty similar to my last time there in the Evora, and only a couple of seconds off a very well driven Evora S, which I really was not expecting.

The final long sprint course combines the two shorter courses and the high speed bend, again the Aero gave a pretty good account of itself, although the brakes didn't have as much bite as expected, the old Evora had the same AP set up and was 200kg heavier, so I will prob change the fluid and try new pads, which hopefully will improve things.

The new Yoko AD08R tyres were very impressive, only spun once while asking a little too much of them.

A great mix of cars, GT3, couple of Evoras, a 1000bhp drag racing Impreza! A few MX5s, assorted beemers, Mitsibushis etc.

Lots of positive comments for the Aero, if anybody is looking for a safe environment to test themselves and their car I recommend giving it a go, and better still it's only £50 for the day😀

I had a not dissimilar experience in a Lotus at Castle Combe. Much the most important factor in cornering on a smooth track surface is the tyres - I found that an early Chapman Elite on modern rubber was no slower round corners than my then current Elise. Once the surface becomes bumpy then suspension design starts to make a bigger difference.

What are the actual weights of the Evora and Aero - as opposed to manufacturer claimed in different states. I would expect GRP bodywork to be heavier than ally but a BMW V8 to be heavier than a Toyota V6. So I would have thought the real world weights to be similar.

I haven't weighed either car, but the Evora is circa 1400 kg and the Aero 1200kg (similar weight to a 350 Exige).

Sounds like a great day, is there a website with details of this?

Sounds like you had a great time and put in some good times thumbs.

A very sensible way to explore the handling envelope.

Google Carlimits, I think there is one day left this year, they also do 4:1 training days, which are more expensive (about 200 quid) but are very good value as you are driving for the full day.
Lotus on Track also use their facilities for a similar day, so would be worth checking their site too.
I did wonder if there was enough interest whether we could arrange a Morgan day there, we'd probably need circa 20 cars.
