We have bought a pup. Springer spanier cross breed. The family car is a Merc C200 saloon without folding rear seat backrest so the question is how we transport the animal in the year (s) until its OK to use a footwell. Problem is peeing, chewing etc plus safety of the dog in any sharp stop. Anyone with practical experience? Dont want to have to change the car, and the other cars are two seaters. How do you cross a Springer with a spanner????
You can buy a dog harness that clips to the child safety seat mounts. Doesn't help with the peeing, chewing though! There are plastic covers for seats that do that.

Adorable pup!
Can you put a small cage on the back seats? I am a fan of cages, used properly, for doggies.

A few years back a driver on the A40 wrote off my car - almost head-on collision.
There were unrestrained dogs in her car.

There are short seat belt extension's available that plug into the seat belts and clip on to the dog harness. I believe it is now against the law to transport a unsecured dog in a car.

When very young and small consider proper box that can be secured on the back seat. When older get a seatbelt compatible harness and a good seat liner. Put an old towel on it to absorb fluids! Keep a couple of spare towels and a pack of baby wipes too. Ask me how I know! Just an afterthought....be aware that some dogs get travel sickness too. Let the dog have time in the car even at home to familiarise.

When we first got our old english puppy we had a saloon car, we managed to find a seat guard from the RAC effectively it mounted on the front seat head rests and the rear head rests and was effectively a hammock so he didn't fall into foot well, he was secured in place with a harness that attached to the seat belt. But seeing as your dog is such a small dog you can easily get a dog crate to sit on the back seats that he'll be very secure and happy in.

Use a proper dog crate on the back seat secured by the seat belts.
Good crates use a plastic tray on the floor and we use "Vet Bed" to line it. Very absorbent and easy to wash. In the early days, take a spare piece.
Also take a towel or two and plenty of drinking water (for the dog) if it's a longer journey.
If you start from early in the dogs development it will soon get used to it but try to make the first few journeys relaxing and not too long initially.
Oh and don't forget the poo bags.

The bit that made me wonder about a crate is that in the front back plane the rear seat squab isnt flat but rises.
