I ordered the short shifter from Miataroadster.com so we will see how this all works. Bill seems like a great guy and custom makes the short shifter how you want. I went with a little bit longer shifter 7" vs the 5" shifter rod I have. Bill is also going to taper the bottom of the shifter for durability. The bend in the shaft in case you are interested is about 50 degrees.

2Sharp, thanks again for sharing! I'm not particularly unhappy with the shifter but know from past cars that improving the shifter feel can enhance the driving experience exponentially! Eager to see the final product and hear your thoughts about shifter feel. I was looking into options myself but will now wait to hear!

Finally got the short shifter from miataroadster. The good news is everything fit perfectly and the shift throw is definitely shorter and very smooth. The only pitfall to this is the price as everything was custom for the morgan including the shaft length, bend/angle to be consistent with factory and they shaped the shifter as it leaves the base differently. Shipped it was about $500.

How do you remove the oem knob?

Unscrew the bottom retaining collar then loosen the 3 retaining screws then unscrew the knob.

Thank you.

Once the locking collar was loosened the knob just unscrewed.

Now I can try to make a knob out of Holly wood. It should finish much like ivory and it is hard. I have a coffee tamper with holly wood and it is very solid.

If it turns out to be a failure then that nice aluminum one from Morgan is in the bucket list.

I put one of the Richbrook Shift Knobs (I think it's what Morgan is selling) on for about half price, available here = GBP24.36 + 7.99 shipping.

First saw them in Peter Dron's Morgan book. They're not two tone finish though; a brighter polish than the brake knob, but not mirror.
