I dont know how up to date you are on French speed limits and enforcement so please excuse me if I am "teaching granny to suck eggs"

In summer, and I dont know when it ends, the posted 90 limits stay posted but are reduced to 80. The old rule was that speed limits reduced automatically to 50 at the sign for the town and went back up at the sign for leaving. In many cases now there is a speed limit sign as well and that might make you think that the old rule no longer applies. It still does. There are tales of confiscation of licences and even of cars if you really give it some but even visiting le Mans when you would expect les flics to focus on the boy racers, we didnt see that many police patrols - bit like the UK. So the tales are true but the risk is not great IMO.

Sadly the roads that once were empty are now crowded. Not as bad as the UK but enough to irritate.

If you don't have the waze app on your phone it might be worth installing. There are a lot of Waze users in France, and it's a very useful aid for getting a heads up about accidents, hold-ups and speed traps/police up ahead. I also find the fact that it gives you an audible warning when you've gone over the speed limit a useful reminder. I find it's reactivity to traffic hold-ups far more up to the minute than the expensive "intelligent" Garmin GPS systems in our Mercs.

You'll find that on waze in France fixed cameras are often pinged as police, as the site cannot show the exact location of speed cameras, so other was users ping them as police to give the exact location.

You'll also find a rash of new cameras being set up - often cunningly hidden (although there is usually a warning sign sometimes well in advance). Including new average speed cameras.

They also have little leeway. My neighbour in Charente was done for going 2kph over the 100kph limit, and got charged €200. I learned some new French swear words in that conversation!

Back in the 70s and 80s I used to enjoy driving in France, even though the cars were not anything special. Now I have the cars the roads are relatively congested and sped control technology every.

Frustrating!!

I thought the roads in France were as empty as ever this year. Speed cameras were well signposted and, as always, drivers coming the other way would always flash you to warn of police activity.

How do you find time to keep the car clean and trim all that bush wink

Well ... the bushes which are mine in the top photo are not trimmed and the ones in the bottom photo are compliments of Mount Juliet 😂

Just boarded the ferry and seen a brown Belgian trad come on board. I hope we come across them on the way off!
