Yes the flashing lights/needle chase is part of the boot up procedure for the car. When mine was playing up and cut out I got this on recovery.

Car would go black on me, engine would be as if dead and strong deceleration. About 1-2 seconds and it would go through the lights/needles and recover. If I was doing 60-70 I would lose about 20-30 mph in this time and be sitting a touch higher than I was before.

Time to get a serious car electrician on it. Flip the top off the fuse box in the engine bay above your feet roughly. Get another car ofas close to the same vintage as possible to compare to and look for voltage/current changes as well as current when the key is totally out in case you have damaged wire.

My S2 had cabling trapped in the engine bay causing the protective cover to wear and then ground. Constant battery drain and movement leading to shorting.

The Coupe has had bad problems with cabling going through the frame into the door leading to similar issues.

Given the danger this presents to both you and other road users with sudden deceleration risk I would have a polite lawyers letter highlighting loss of trust and potential danger giving them one opportunity to fix prior to return. I have no doubt they will fix it and would not let it put you off but it is best to make certain these things are understood clearly.

These cars are lovely but they do have the ability to frustrate. The more you love them the more it irks. Don't let it kill things, just see it as a burp.

I will admit that when it happened to me it put the fear of god up me and I am glad there was no one on my rear bumper as there often is on our roads.

Hi Alastair,
I must admit this last "episode" was the most frightening as it was a pretty steep run down hill and I was literally standing on the brakes as I was getting pretty close to a slower moving car in front of me. I know previously you (I think) mentioned about water ingress but the car hasnt been washed for a fair few weeks and not been in any rain so I think that isnt the issue.
I agree about using a comparison but my S1 isn't really similar I suppose?. So, was thinking about taking it to a dealer rather than an auto electrician as they hopefully "know the product"
Who did you use, and, would you recommend them. I have used a specialist but was thinking of RTCC as they seem to have Aero experience.
Re legal letter to MMC, would they just say that the product left the factory in perfect condition but could say it was miss used/tracked/etc and thus damaged ?
regards
T

Probably best to move to PM.

I did not intend the Morgan letter to be something that goes to create confrontation but if it is like mine it is dangerous. But if you have purchased something that has a fault as significant and potentially dangerous as this you need to notify them and let them resolve it.

To be clear - the factory stepped up on mine. They took the car and did some work on it. It no longer does this particular trick. Shred the wiper blades on the windscreen surround (requested fixes four times) yes, still does that! Plenty of other borks but not the big scary one.

RTCC are skilled and if contracted to perform the testing on YOUR behalf they can interact with the factory to get them to pay for the isolation/resolution as you would expect. If you are close to RTCC then you are also close to me (20 mins from them) so I am happy to help with a 2013 Coupe which should be close for comparison if you want to.

PM me if you want to chat or meet.

Have you actually checked the earlier suggestions?

If you are concerned for your and others safety then stop driving it.

But given the track record of misfortune in your S1

Next time a gypsy offers you some lucky heather, I suggest you buy the lot! scared

No easy answer to this problem. Picked up the Aero - cut off switch replaced and wiring protection improved (sorry no details) but they have tested the car with no problems identified so hopefully sorted.

Probable cause - water ingress into the electrical system at some point.

They also corrected an exhaust rattle and replaced stiff bonnet catches I didn’t know about.

Thought all the Aeros were complete but saw this interesting colour combo on the grass almost ready to deliver.

hmm... that wouldn't be my colour choice... and I'll celebrate every owner that specs an individual colour palette, especially one that's so conspicuously, er, bold rofl
