On Tarka the sensors were identical, same length, same plugs, etc.

So that your sensors are not the same is really odd. I wonder if someone has been making changes in the past, or if the factory fitted the wrong sensor on one side of the car.

Tom at Williams said to always replace them in pairs with new as a new and old sensor will have a differing response and this can cause problems.

I think that I had better take advice Peter. The lengths are different for starters, as you can see from the photo and the profiles of the sensors are different too.
The left sensor has a green plug, the right, blue. In the photo the left is at the top.

Just bought this one via eBay for the pricely sum of £4.49 delivered.

Worked out of the box with my Android tablet and suitable app after selecting Ford OBD2. Guessing the sophisticated features come with the app you use not the dongle

Common thing with Fords and lambda sensors, don't use pattern parts use genuine Ford parts, (obviously if they were in first place)

About the colour coding of the lamdba sensors,I think the Green is pre cat and the blue after cat .

It doesn't matter if it is green or blue. Both are the same. The colour is only to make the right assembly in the car.
On my 4/4 I had a pre cat sensor and a post cat sensor on the original exhaust. After change to a Librands system I only need the pre cat sensor.
It doesn't have a post cat sensor. But the problem was the cable on the pre cat sensor was too short for the new position of the cat in the exhaust,
but the not needed post cat sensor was. So I assembled them together, green mother to blue father by cut of the noses of the housing.
And everything worked as well as before. So there are now differences because of the colour. Also the sensors were exactly the same.
The colour is only to protect miss assembly with the wiring harness in the car.
