After my last fueling, I quickly began smelling fuel and noticed the windshield getting damp, a few droplets at a time. I was some miles from home so I kept going. This symptom came and went. It seemed to start up again this morning when I blipped the throttle to downshift so I immediately returned home. I have not yet located the leak but its intermittent nature makes me wonder if the fuel pump's regulator is going bad. I have heard that fuel pump failures are an issue for these rigs. Mine is a 2012. The on-line X Wedge manual says 58 psi fuel pressure. Thought I'd start the conversation and then go try to locate the leak. Wish me luck.

Most likely to be the crimped on hose clamps on the fuel line connections up by the throttle body. Need to remove them and replace with proper fuel line clamps (not Jubilee type worm drive clamps - they really aren't good on fuel injection lines)

Ditto on the stock hose clamps. Happened to me as well. Used the worm drive clamps in a pinch to get home with but then replaced them with proper fuel clamps.

Fuel will do a number on plexiglass. Avoid.

I also decided to install a fire extinguisher under the dash on the passenger side. Spurting fuel on a hot engine and exhaust manifolds gave me the willies...

Thanks for the feedback, gents. I went for a brief spin with the black aluminum plate removed for better visibility. I couldn't get a repeat performance. Everything stayed dry. Because I'd had the fuel hoses off when I installed the frame brace, I thought MAYBE so I gave the ears another little pinch. When I first installed the brace, I used screw clamps and had no trouble. Got the correct type but perhaps I didn't get them tight enough? We'll see. I think I'll go buy a fire extinguisher, just in case.

I had the same symptoms of fuel spray on the wind shield and passenger!
The outermost fuel pipe between the cylinders had chaffed right through on the sharp edge of the fan housing.
It was masked by the outer heat resistant sleeve which I had to cut away with a sharp knife to see the problem.

Red Three and Michael H, you were right. All I changed was to add a little more pinch to the hose clamp ears at the injector inlets and go for a test run. With a new 5# dry chem on the seat next to me, I did 160 miles on twisty mountain roads, the only kind of road to my west, gloat, with nary a wisp nor whiff of petrol in the air. Life is, once again, good. PaulR, I don't have the cooling fan, nor heat shield on the fuel pipe you mentioned. Still, it's good to know I'm not alone in experiencing fuel on the windshield and to learn that there's another possible source.

John dont rely on giving a little more pinch to the stock hose clamps get some proper screwed hose clamps as Calum's link. I had fuel spray out from the inadequate crimped clamps & it hit the LH screen & it crazed. I fitted proper clamps & a Fairbourne screen.

I hope I'm not crowing too soon about having solved the fuel leak. After several apparent "fixes" that eventually failed, mostly tightening or adding clamps, I finally decided that the real problem wasn't the clamping, it was the hose. I remember that there was a tiny bit of rubber on the brass barb when I got the hose off for the frame brace installation. Apparently, the elasticity of the hose isn't enough to fill in that gap, thus the intermittent leakage. I bit the bullet, so to speak, and got some 100 psi rated 5/16" F.I. hose, Dayco p/n 80079, and put it on with some screw type hose clamps. They weren't worm drive clamps, although I'd have no hesitation to use those again. I used the entire 18 inches of hose so that I could stand to lose an inch or two in future. It doesn't have the fabric outer casing but I don't think I care.

My initial clamp installation must have been slightly off of square with the hose because I found that it needed to be tightened a bit after a few days and trips.
