I am working on a 54 Morgan. The temp gauge doesn't function. I believe the car originally may have had a capillary tube type of sending unit and gauge. This one now has an electric one. I tried testing the sending unit using hot water. Not sure where to attach the lead for the wire that goes to the gauge. Most sending units I have seen have a button that is insulated from the body of the unit. This one doesn't. When I touch the wire to the unit, it registers 'H'. Otherwise it registers "C". I have been told these sending units are no longer available.

Ideas as to a fix?

early 1950's gauges read hot until warmed up, ie the default on the gauge is hot on the needle!

Some change the internals of the meter or buy an electronic converter gadget that converts the output from the sender to the meter if you get my drift?
