I applied to get my Cat C1 back on my licence for the motorhome about 3 weeks ago. I have just learned from the DVLA that my optician is no good.

She has been an experienced opthalmologist for several years now but I need to go to specsavers for an eye test. There is no mention of this on the application forms and apparently, if I got an appointment on my own at specsavers, I would need to go for another one. This is so that specsavers can inform the DVLA that I have applied for a test!

I wonder how much money changed hands when the contract was signed.

PS. I know specsavers should have an upper case first letter.

The problem may be that if your optician ( or Optometrist as they now like to be called, why? ) is so bad, you may not be able to find a Specsavers

That was tongue in cheek. She is an excellent optometrist. I thought the UK eye test was a standard. There is a difference, you know. The opthalmologist was previously known as an opthalmic optician, they can look after all aspects of the eyes. Opticians can advise, supply and fit spectacles and contact lenses.

My experience of Specsavers would suggest you take a packed lunch.

Bob went to Specsavers wed a/noon and an Asian chap did it all, very nice chap . Funny we started to chat about cars in his room and it strayed onto mogs, in a long while . I gave him TM details and he wrote it down. My mothers line had Glaucoma hence the checks.

I guess its like medicals for flying or indeed any other private use. You can expoect to pay - the NHS wont cover it.

I have the genetic condition Retinitus Pigmentosa and as a consequence for the last few years have driven on a medical licence renewable each year following a test at Specsavers.. I was very sceptical about them especially as my sight is monitored at my local eye hospital.each year. However they have been very efficient and reassured me during rather nervous times as clearly each year I worry about loosing my licence. DVLA pay the costs so it's free to me.

So Specsavers are good but the system wasteful of public money. The only difference between the tests they take and the tests at the eye hospital is that Specsavers test both eyes together whilst the hospital tests each eye separately.

Thank you for that, Andy. I hope you continue to keep your licence as long as you need. I agree, it seems rather a waste of money.

Optometrist visit today. As far as she's concerned, I'm fine. She said she wasn't allowed to tell the customer - DVLA again!

The difference is that the normal "follow the dot" test is monoptic. The driving test is binoptic. I hope that's the right spelling but you get the gist. They even want the "read the chart" eyesight test done without glasses even if you wear them all the time.

Optician - Dispenses glasses and lenses
Optometrist - Examines the eyes for the prescription
Opthalmologist - Does surgery.
